Got around to replacing the stater motor internals this morning. Someone had definitely been there before me, I think that it may have been a recon unit rather than the original. If this is not the original, then the contacts were in a very poor state for a vehicle with only 105k on the clock in total. Maybe it was replaced very early in its life.
The main feed contact was burnt to a thin edge
Not a difficult job, but getting to the top nut is a PITA. You need to tie the bunch of connectors with some string, lift them up out of the way and secure them to a point on the bulkhead. Then you can at least see what you're doing.
Doesn't fire up any better, it was fine to start with, but it does sound altogether better.
