wow £7k just for a Morocco trip, I spent less than that including buying a truck :) (which to be fair almost stayed in Morocco on the first trip)

If I was looking for an 80 I would be interested at this sort of price point and vehicle mods and with work being done at a recognised specialist like JV you can check out the sellers claims :)

Maybe if I sell my truck I can list all the rust treatment and paint I've bough in the advert and add that to the sale price?

It would make a good base truck, some peace of mind knowing the engine should be good, and the axle rebuilds, and all such.

But what confuses me is spending on a winch bumper with no winch, and sliders with a lift for Morocco? The lift I might understand, but would sliders be necessary?

It gives me the impression that the guy just got carried away with bolting stuff on without much thought for its use, but that would have been good in my case, because all the bits he's added, I would (or have) added myself, but for Morocco, I think I'd have thought again.

I would like sliders for example, but I've got the bendy integrated ARB steps and brush bars instead. They have to rust away before I'll lash out on some nice sliders.

I wanted a winch so I fitted the winch bumper to have a winch. I can't see any benefit from a winch bumper without...

My truck's got wheels too, there's a coincidence. :icon-rolleyes:

There you go, "now't as queer as folk", as they say somewhere north of Brum....

anyway its not properly overland prepared.....................the Dakar sticker is missing :D

I chanced upon that one a few days ago and despite my decision not to have an 80 it did make me pause for thought , thank god it's an auto .

Auto is the way to go in an 80. If Toyota had offered the UK 24v in manual and auto, I can tell you now you'd struggle to find a manual. No one in their right mind really would by a manual 80. I can say that as I have both. Other than a bit of an advantage in the MPG dept, there's just no comparison. Changing gear in a DB5 whilst belting through the Alps is probably a delight but in 3 tonnes of beast, it's a chore.

I'm afraid it would have to be a manual for me, my other arm needs something to do :)

driving is why the great spaghetti monster gave us limbs, 1 for each control, gears, steering, go and stop :D

I've never driven an auto 80, so can't comment specifically.

But, I did have an as-new 10 month old 3.0lt V4 petrol auto Pajero with 14k km on the clock, it drove me crazy because it always seemed to be screaming to change up, way later than I would have left it had it been a manual.

It had a tiptronic shift though, and I loved that. Changing up when I wanted to, it drove as sweet as a nut!

Think you have answered your own question there Clive me boy.

Auto means you can drive round roundabouts and still enjoy your McFries.

and there you have it..............................autos make you fat

Good grief.

Oi, hang on a freakin minute ......

I honestly thought I would never want an auto, in anything. Having experienced what an absolute chore a manual can become when touring in the 80, I now want an auto. Chris hit the proverbial nail on the head. In 99% of driving I'd say a manual doesn't really add anything to an 80 other than work for the driver. And that work can become exceedingly tiresome such as when in traffic or when climbing switchbacks.

And of course mate that box to the 24v power plant and you're laughing. If I ever did another, not that I would. Ever, so don't ask. But if I did, in an alternate universe...I'd strongly consider that base vehicle being a 24v auto import. Yes I do like lockers and yes I know you could drive right across the world on tarmac, but having an 80 with no lockers is like a supermodel with knobbly knees. It just ain't right. I'd pay up and fit air lockers. Decent chassis, auto and the big lump would be the perfect start in life.

There are those who say you must have a manual because they can be fixed in the field. Well just how many problem autos have we had? If they work now then they'll keep going. I've had this gearbox out three times and had a clutch that had to be replaced the DAY we were going to France. I'm still not happy with it. My auto on the other hand is a dream.

Although this is going over old ground for me, ( the 24V auto thing) I totally agree with Chris that if we had had autos as an option then 24V manuals would have been rare indeed as are 100 manuals. I test drove a 100 manual a few months ago, great gearchange and better control of the revs ie you could changeup just that bit sooner to gain a bit of economy and on the open road it was ok but get in town it was a PITA, worse than driving a van.
I had the 80 auto A1ALL for 16 years and not once did I wish it was a manual but while my DD at present is a GX manual I bet there is at least once a journey I wish it was an auto.
Some Imports do have lockers as the one I bought the other day has and it is my intention to make that UK spec pristine 24V auto.

Thats a nice looking truck.

The guys spent about £15k on it, plus the cost of purchase of the truck, so must've invested near £20,000......

Considering its 22 years old, still looks like a good buy if you could haggle a little, there have been some nice 80's on here this year at less money.

Pete

If the advert is correct I would say that 80 is a bargain, It doe's not take long to run out of pocket money on upgrading one of these.

Dave.

Is the fact it needed a new engine so early in life... a concern?
