thanks everyone - Gav, Grimbo, Towpack. So yeah, the (non-Toyota) dealer did think it was a Japanese import - mainly due to the almost complete lack of corrosion and something about the dash layout he mentioned. I haven't been able to confirm it - says first registered in '96 on the DVLA site...
