How about this little one?
I pulled it out and didnt find any lights on. It comes out about an inch. There is a winch and a trailer hitch. maybe something to do along those lines. no cockpit lights. does feel like a light knob though. There is a added temp gauge but haven't noticed it make a difference there. maybe a bulb burned out. Ill keep trying to trace it.
this is a pic from the interweb which shows the same button or at least in the same place, under the brake light.ok. apparently it isnt connected to anything.
You're right. i found hazard button.Middle switch in the top row should be hazard with red writing.
Looking at some early wiring diagrams it could be a part of the early emission control system as they also, in some diagrams, have an extra temperature gauge.
But why it would have a switch, I have no idea.

I wish i had some owner info. I like your out of the box idea. I dont see exterior evidence of anything having been mounted and nothing on the inside. Im not sure how long this has vehicle has been in the US, prior to 2012 as that is the date of the tires and are like new. I though used imported 4x4s were supposed to be fitted with rear seatbelts and roll bar to pass inspection but I could certainly be wrong. requirements change over the years. this came into US used so there could be some button or switch used there but not here or added to get here then removed.Ownership history might reveal it once probably had a roof warning light you know the amber dome men at work kind of thing ?
Ok. found a manual. should be instrument panel light control. thought that would work with headlights but maybe not.I would think that that small knob is for some accessory as it does look stock 40 at all. Do you have spotlights or other non factory kit on it?

You're welcome.An answer - excellent!
It would be great to have the ability to increase the dash board lights' brightness on my BJ but I suspect that it was the 12 volt FJs rather than 24 volt BJs. One day I will get round to stripping out the light shields from within the gauge cluster.
Thanks for letting us know the answer, it's appreciated.
