Got it working in the end. Was trying to to contunity testing for in & out per video
My motor was a bit 'chopy' when applying power so couldn't get it to stay at 2-7/8 when extended.
When putting locker back on the shift fork wouldn't line up so had to have locker about 2mm out, screw in shift...
got the magnets redone and electric motor working now.
Having issues trying to get alignment on spring.
Should the spring be "wound up" when its in the locked position or unlocked?
I have them in a NSNS orientation. So each opposite magnet is the same.
I didn't check the polarity (as it appeared via mud not needed) but maybe thats whats wrong (how do I do that?).
I'm going to check via calipers that the two re-aligned magnets match the two original (and undisturbed) magnets
All cleaned and ready to go back in.
Bench testing after regluing 2 Magnets back.
Getting no movement when power to pin 1 & 2. Feel tiny "attempt" but no cigar (note: no gears connected so no pressue- just shaft)
Feels like its binding a bit although it can spin in the cover on its own.
Took 2...
Got bolt off and disconnected locker from axle ok.
Got electric cover off ok but all 3 bolts on other cover snapped. Had to drill each of them out and retap.
All looks good inside (other than perished o-rings) so putting back together and will bench test. Some good posts/videos on ih8mud for...
Took wheel off and more room. Finally managed (wild cold chisel and buddy) to get bolt off. Locker removed.
Took off elec cylinder (3 Philips screws) and 2 of magnets loose - that explains why not moving with electrics
Tried to get 3 10mm bolts off other cover and all three snapped!! Awh...
Jon, I'll give it another go but very little room up top (unless take off spring etc.)
My steel epoxy lasted 5 secs and came off
Otherwise will try a sideways dremel to slow cut it off (in slices)!
took off cover with and could pry plunger back to the left but would spring back again. Undid the shaft lock.
Trying to get locker out now but have one top bolt thats stripping. Very little room in there unless I take off shock, spring and wheel to get some room. Even dremel won't fit in there...
Have rear diff back in (only took 3-4hrs doing mechanic yoga in my driveway with a trolley jack ; PITA)
Axles back in , new oil etc.. Sounds much better. Left it to my regular (older guy) mechanic and he thinks it lost the pinion preload and messup the lower pinion bearing. No kit form Rough...
Not many shavings on drain plug and none in oil
axle shafts in good condition.
Pulled rear diff and looks in good shape (at least from what I can see) and no looseness
Appears to be grinding near pinion side
Will try and take apart tomorrow
Presume I'll need new crush sleeve and likely a bearing...
thats what I was thinking but good to be sure
I'll be checking for a 4x4 diff mechanic if my local guy isn't up to it. As likely it will be sitting around for awhile - depending on whats broken and needs replacing.
Still scratching my head on why its happened as not been doing any wheeling ...
1997 USA 1fzfe 80 auto with 350K miles
Had a small noise (whine) from rear axle last few weeks so pulled the rear propshaft. With rear up on jacks would rear a small whine from rear diff but wouldn't tell if pinion area (had small leaking seal redone last year in Slovenia at Landcruiser shop)...

Howya;s ; I've a 97 petrol brought back from the States. runs LPG as well. I'm down in Athenry
CVs with 'leak' (more goop than fluid) is a common issue. I've mine to redo again (oil seal on axle that goes), Check your diff breather is open and working
The gas 'pressure' on the fuel cap is...
Went a few years back and Norway is spectacular. Had RTT and no issues finding spots but Finland/Sweden easier/better facilitated as others indicated
Beware the distances and weather conditions (winter/snow/ice). Didn't go all the way to North as for me wasn't worth the loooong drive
On a wee camping trip in Scotland (over from Ireland) and had a tyre pop the other day. Trying to get it fixed so have as spare.
However rest of tyres are 2nd hand and methinks safer to get a new set (of 5)
Thinking of BFG AT, Cooper or similar ilk. Any suggestions
80% road, 20% off-road...
I have one to go back on one of my calipers but turns out I'll need to drill out the tiny screws that hold the dust shield in; hence havn't got around to it
what kind of bird!
Most 80s (for overlanding) are way overweight (especially USA and some in Aussieland) but not an "issue" unless doing serious offroading. Better if can be under the limit and lighter is better
I'm planning a diet once I do a chop and convert to poptop cabin style (aka Michael...
agree that Maintaince & rust are main issues to look for on the 80s.
I've LPG on my 97 and once understood it works fine. Check you have LPG stations near you as they are declining in popularity (plenty on the continent)
I don't see any LPG "bits" on the engine picture so wondering what...
