do we still make stuff like this?

There are still a number of British machine tool makers going strong, usually specialist stuff like big mills and grinders. One of the łargest being colchester lathes. There is a big demand for the 2nd hand stuff in the 3rd world and eastern europe.

‘New’ Air Con gas, one to avoid…

It's been around for a while on newer models. Old designs, like Berlingo, can still use R134a, but all recent designs must use a gas with lower global warming potential. It doesn't have to be 1234, but this has been standardized by most manufacturers. Yes it is flammable, but the quantities are...

    80s series at auction

Biggest problem is rust, so you need to see it yourself, in person, with your own rust detector (screwdriver and hammer).

    80 Series flashing overdrive light

Is the mechanic that cant read the codes, the same mechanic that said change the box? In fact, why not just...

    Timing belt post,again

If you have no invoice to show what was done, then assume nothing was done. Writing in a service book means nothing really, an invoice is not proof, but slightly better.

    80 Series flashing overdrive light

Yeah, you can connect a couple of pins and the od light will flash a code. Probably a busted solenoid, as it doesnt really check anything else ( like input speed versus output speed).

    Is brine worse than salt

But thats assuming that what they call brine is actually brine. Its easier to say brine as it is being applied as a liquid, and people associate it with the traditional salt. When in fact it may be a chemical mix which is much more corrosive than salt ( or genuine brine).
  35. D

    Is brine worse than salt

As Clive says, there can be other stuff added to the salt. Here they call it salt , when in fact its a chemical concoction thats designed to work at lower temps, plus hang around longer on the road.Because its kind of sticky, it also helps reduce dust from the studded tyres ripping the road...

    Noise when shifting into Reverse.

    Adding aircon

You'll struggle to cool anything with those electric compressors. The smaller unit at 30 amps is only 360 watts, or 1/2hp. The regular compressor can take up to 5 or 6hp at max output, so a half hp compressor will seriously struggle. Either way, you still need the rest of the a/c parts. The...

    Adding aircon

Disconnect the pipes on the engine side, and the whole box comes out towards the passenger seat (after taking out the mounting screws, blower etc). In the box is the txv, sensor etc. Every single japanese car was made this way until about 10 years ago. Now its all one huge assembly that takes...

    Not the normal tyre question....

Most of the sipes on the coopers dont actually go anywhere, so I wonder how/where they eject the water? Marketing bullshit, as usual.
  41. D

    Air con idler pulley...........

The clutch doesnt have any material, it is metal on metal. So a bit of rust dust is normal if not used for a while. Worth checking the clutch gap though as the metal wears over time. Check the gap with a business card. If too large it can slip, so need to change the shim behind it to a thinner one.

  46. D

    AC Compressor

It will only lose oil through a leak, or if parts are replaced. The oil fill in a compressor is never the right qty as they dont know how much the system holds on the vehicle. This varies, not least with something that has rear air. Blowing nitrogen through wont push out any oil, and it will...

    AC Compressor

You drain the old oil from the old compressor, and measure the amount. You then drain the new compressor, and replace the same amount of oil as came from the old compressor. Preferably use new fresh oil, and not the stuff you drained from the new compressor. Depending on what else gets...
