Tyre test, an interesting alternative at an attractive price.

However, tyre leader are doing Toyo’s for less in that size. Tyre Toyo 265/65 R17 112H 3PMSF | Open Country A/T 3 | TyreLeader.co.uk - [Leaving Land Cruiser Club]

Tyre test, an interesting alternative at an attractive price.

I would be interested too as they seem really quite good value. I noticed that those folks on 4wd24/7 in one of their latest vids have got them on the cheap Colorado. Seem to stand up to the punishment that they are putting them through. BFG’s are crazy now, my first set I think we4@re about 150...

    New tyre time?

Yes many times. Sometimes fitted sometimes just supplied. They’re also fairly good at not advertising tyres that they haven’t got in stock unlike some other online sites.

    Speedo

It is the small square box to the righthand side of the circle. I’ve been under the dash earlier today for a quick look and there are actually more ecu boxes than I thought for an early 80. Maybe one of them has developed a mysterious fault, or not. I disconnected the main battery just on the...

    Speedo

Thank you Jon for your help. I’ve looked up the manual that I have, Ellery, but I can’t find an ecu on mine. I’m going to check to see if it’s getting power to the sensor and go up from there and try and follow the wires. Thanks again.

    Speedo

Well I can’t get the cruise control sensor from Yoshi, amayama or partsouk. Tried Garry the 80 breaker, he doesn’t have one either. I’m not great at electrics but wondering if it is reparable? Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    Speedo

Hi folks, Another conundrum for those in the know. My 80 was a jap import years ago. The speedo has been intermittent for some time and stopped working. Reckoned it was the conversion gear for the kmh to mph so I ordered another. Bingo it worked, for 5 minutes but not the cruise control module...

    6 speed gearbox conversion

Just need plumbed in air and possibly a bit more patience. Then remember how the box works. Sod it, better to just get a Unimog, loads of sticks in that. There’s a farmer near us who has one straight piped, sounds mental coming up the road at full chat. Off topic I know even though I brought it up.

    6 speed gearbox conversion

Hmm, this looks like a good plan. Damn, I thought mine was impossible to beat. Right, need to fit a Porsche 7 speed manual, maybe now getting silly.

    6 speed gearbox conversion

Nice idea! A few reasons really for the 6 speed idea. Yes better take off, yes better economy on the m’way and just because 6 speeds are better than 5 . Also, I haven’t seen it though there could be loads of reasons why not! It just tickled my fancy when I was running through ideas and I love...

I think it has to be UK. For what reason who knows.

    6 speed gearbox conversion

Yes that was my concern too. Isn’t the H152 out of them though?? Anyway, it’s pie in the sky right now but I might put some research into it. Also then need to choose which way to go as the auto is great in sand and off road too.

    Nothing's ever easy is it.......

Unless it has changed since last summer, the plate needs to have UK and the flag on it I think. Our Volvo has older EU and stars plates, so needed to put a UK sticker on the back door like we used to do. Otherwise no problem. Never been stopped for speeding in France yet….sometimes not for lack...

    6 speed gearbox conversion

I suppose I’m thinking that a manual conversion is fairly straight forward with limited or no electrics involved. Looking at the more interesting autos they have ecu’s to keep them working, which could be a recipe for problems.

    6 speed gearbox conversion

That’s an interesting article thank you for sharing. I was initially thinking of the 6 speed manual I have in my 120, could be quite cool. Then also the auto in the 150 and look at something like what Wholsale autos do in Oz, except they use the 100 series 5 speed. None of this would be cheap of...

    6 speed gearbox conversion

Hi folks. Just wondering if anyone knows if you could bolt on a 120 6 speed manual box onto the back of a 1hdt?? It probably isn’t a direct fit and lots of messing around, but my other option is a 5 speed auto from a later 100 series. Car is currently an early 12v with 4 speed auto. Just a...

    OEM sub tank captive nuts

Typically I can’t find a link either! It was back in 2007 so quite likely not made anymore. Closest I’ve found in size is one from these guys. It looks like it doesn’t hang down far. On the other hand there is a company in Oz that replaces the main tank with a 130 or 140L one. Then it’s in the...

    OEM sub tank captive nuts

I’ve had the big tank on a previous 80 and it always got pinged with stones or banging off something. The one I have now I put the little front runner one (62L) and gravity fed so no electrics to cock up. It’s always been fine, although prior to having a family I traveled quite light! In Algeria...

Who is doing what maintenance today?

The terrain tamer ones on my 120 looked rubbish after one winter. I’ve read that the Koni raid shocks are good and I’ve wondered about them for a while after the icons die. Being from Europe they might hopefully last a bit longer on salted roads.

Who is doing what maintenance today?

I think 4x4 works seem to bring it in and it’s more expensive than when I got it, there’s a surprise. I got mine through Julian at overland cruisers. Next stage I reckon is superior engineering but then we’re talking serious expense. I’m not sure I can be faffed with adjustable dampers, but I...

Who is doing what maintenance today?

I’ve been through a few different brands over the years. OME, TJM, Terrafirma (truly crap), terrain tamer (on my 120). But the best so far is what have had for just over 10 years which is the stage 1 Icon lift. It was expensive and still is and I would have preferred 2” but they start at 3” or...

    Turkey and Georgia

Sorry Garry, we didn’t drive we flew in to see friends living there and rented a car. Judging by the state of some of the cars there I would say buy insurance at the border like other countries. And like other places, cross your fingers you don’t need it! It’s probably worth slightly less than...

    Turkey and Georgia

Without doubt one of the best countries on earth to visit, Georgia that is. It’s also the maddest driving I think I’ve ever been party to, and that list is quite long. Incredibly friendly, scenery quite extraordinary. We will be going back maybe next year to visit.

10in Tablet Mount for my 80

I screwed a ram mount for an iPad mini on the left hand side of the dash where it curves round to the glove box. Enough room to still open that and it’s not in the way for the passenger. All through Africa and many other places and it’s not fallen off, moved or anything else.

80 Series Landcruiser Plug-and-Play Keyless Remote Entry

Mine arrived on Saturday along with some gauge pods and stuff. Under 2 weeks from Oz is not bad at this time of year. Haven’t fitted anything yet as my 80 isn’t here, hoping to get it back in the next couple of weeks. Quality looks good though.

    3” series 80 exhausts.

Yep, and in fact any tractor made in the ‘90’s. A local farmer contractor here loves old Ford’s. I’m not sure of the models but all are from the 80’s and 90’s and only cost him a few thousand quid. The main one driving a 3 year old McHale bailer/wrapper was a TW 35 from 1995 or so. He bought it...

All amusing and good points. The reasoning of going down the single cab route was the possible tax implications etc, but also to be able to tow the mobile sheep folds or stock trailer, plus have the dogs in a dog box and quad bike on the pick up. Some sheep are over an hour away so going back...

Very valid points. LC commercials are fine and good, but last week I had to pick up 2 dead and smelly sheep and drive them back from where they were grazing. Believe me you don’t want them in a ‘car’. Pick up is better for wet dirty dogs too and some of the kit I need to drag around. Looking at...

Also inherently suspicious as they are as Gr8yota says, cheaper than in Oz. Plus RHD which seems odd in a country that drives on the right. However, also nothing ventured nothing gained.

Thank you very much for that. I have a couple of contacts in Dubai and Japan as it turns out (I didn’t actually know, brother in law does) so would go that way. In any case might be a good excuse for a sunny winter few days. Wife is thrilled at the idea….erm

Exactly. My plan is to circumvent the nonsense by bringing one in. At least I can get a tough vehicle, decent engine, manual transmission easy to service and should go for years. I’m rather fed up like a lot of like minded people of the meddling for no possible good reason.

Hi Shayne. Yeh that’s the one I wasn’t sure about but it appears so. It’s a fairly horrible 1.9 engine though. Thinking a 4.5V8 diesel would be better, less stressed and probably last a lot longer.

However, a single cab pick up will still retain all the benefits of commercial status. My worry is there isn’t a single cab on the market here in the UK that can legally tow 3.5 tonnes (at least not yet and you can be sure that VOSA will be stopping people to check) hence the search abroad...

Morning Andy. As yet I’m not 100%, the accountant is looking into it and some on here may understand and know considerably more than I do. But, they are to be re-classified as ‘cars’ not commercial vehicles. As they all (I think) emit more than the highest VED tax rate of 255g per km, they will...
