    FJ45 Short Bed Question

Hi Craig, The truck is a BJ40 , produced in April/May 1975. It's an early one as production started in February that year. It was built as a hardtop with barn type rear doors. 3litre diesel with a 4 speed is stock for that model. Check the seller's paperwork does not list as a FJ45 because it...

    FJ45 Short Bed Question

Hello Craig and welcome.... Looking at the photos, the truck is not an FJ45. It is a modified 40 Series, shorter wheelbase than a 45 and it's been fitted with a 45 cab/top. I also think that it is a BJ not an FJ - BJ is s diesel engine and the FJ is a petrol one. Why? because the lower badge on...

    ROD B

Hi Rod and welcome. There are two places worth trying and both will know your HJ45 model. They are: www.euro4x4parts.com or www.megastore4x4.com. Both have English speakers. For Toyota's 70th birthday they had Toyota Gazoo reproduce a range of parts for the FJ40 but as you no doubt know many...

    LJ78 2LTE loss of power

It sounds to me like a problem with the auto gearbox, not that I am an expert but the symptoms you describe are identical to those that a friend suffered on his auto box in the 80s. Sad indeed but I would think repairable. Regards, Rodger

Front of the car is lower than the back..

Springs loose their tension over time so see if they lower car's set are flatter then the other set. Or the bushes in the shackles could be worn out. Careful measurement and comparison between the two should tell you where the difference and the reason is.

    Driver seat

There's not much room behind the seat before you either hit the rear seat (if fitted) or the rear inner arch but if yo release the 4 bolts that hold the seat to the lower frame and then move it back as far as possible and drill new holes. You may lose the adjuster but then you might gain a...

    New member

Hello and welcome.... Our Bj40, with a 60 series engine etc., has been our daily driver for the last 14 years although I suspect that the Alaskan conditions are a lot more extreme than we're used to even so ours is often on trails and tracks up in the mountains or desert. Once you have sorted...

    the straight through crew.

Our 40 went through with no advisories but the was a discussion between two of the testers and the manager because our new BFGs have a more pronounced shoulder on them which really pushes the limit on the flares but Corinne pointed out to them that because of the tracks in the mountains and...

Well I have never dealt with them but I've just taken a look at their website which in itself is poor quality . IMO they have far too big a range of vehicles for them to be specialist and it suggests to me that they are box shifters. There a a number of specialist suppliers for Land Cruisers and...

    Oil Filter Issue

There is a FB group - 40 series land Cruiser owners - it's Australian group but they do seem to be able to source different parts or give information, so they may be worth trying. Oil Filter Issue

Hello and welcome.... I suggest trying www.sor.com (Spectre Offroad) as they specialise in all 40 series and, in particular, restoration parts. They are based in LA and have a full catalogue online. If they don't have it, let us know, as there are other places that may have it. Regards, Rodger

Can you turbo an old 2H?

Andy is undoubtedly the guru on 60 series trucks. My 40 has a 2h fitted and originally I was thinking of a turbo but the engine's history/mileage, etc are a complete unknown and at its first oil change soon after we got it I found piles of oil crud inside the motor so, after extensive cleaning...

    Great looking 60

That was back in 1984-6 so a long time since I knitted one of them but send me the wool and we'll see.... What staggers me is the price that the replicas fetch these days and no, I didn't keep one for myself. More fool me! Rodger

    Great looking 60

I really enjoyed this lady's eclectic collection. Aside from her enthusiasm about the 60 series I was particularly chuffed when she mentioned that the GT40 had started life as a GTD. I was one of the founders and MD of GTD during the development of the GT40 replica. Rodger

    FJ40 1978 Dash Knob ID

An answer - excellent! It would be great to have the ability to increase the dash board lights' brightness on my BJ but I suspect that it was the 12 volt FJs rather than 24 volt BJs. One day I will get round to stripping out the light shields from within the gauge cluster. Thanks for letting...

    FJ40 1978 Dash Knob ID

Middle switch in the top row should be hazard with red writing. Looking at some early wiring diagrams it could be a part of the early emission control system as they also, in some diagrams, have an extra temperature gauge. But why it would have a switch, I have no idea. Rodger

    Hi from Dublin, Ireland.

Hi Barry and welcome.... One owner! Wow! With your '81 BJ having front discs already, it sounds like it is a 'European' spec model so will have the extra number in the VIN - '81 was a 9 and the last year they made this specification. If memory serves Mr T only made 4997 'European' spec BJs...

    Rover 3.5 V8 in a hj45

The Rover engine, being aluminium, is a lot lighter than any of the Toyota 6-pot engines and may possibly give you an unsprung weight problem/s with your truck. Like Grimbo says - it's an old engine - which was first debuted by Buick in 1951 and is probably why most folks going V8 choose the 350...

I have 60 series axles on my 40 but it is somewhat modified but you are right the 60 series axle is 70mm wider but otherwise the parts are interchangeable. Some have fitted Hilux callipers (version 6, I think) but mine are HJ60 but my master cylinder piston diameter is 25.4 as opposed to the...
