Yep, this. Baseline service is more important than any mods. Much more than just oil and filters. Consider front axle rebuild, all suspension bushings, check UJs, check cooling system, all new belts and hoses etc….

I will follow this with interest. Is exactly what I would like to do. Wink4x4 do a kit for matching the 8HP to the FTE. Probably the best diesel engine and auto transmission combo you can put in an 80.

If the canvas itself is leaking I would suggest requesting the spec of the canvas used. Either way, if the seams are sealed as you say, it may be possible to completely resolve the issue with a proper canvas waterproofing treatment.

I would second Gr8Yota. Definitely seal the seams and treat the fabric and check again. What fabric did they use and what is the hydrostatic head?

I wouldn’t assume you’ve got a problem that needs fixing until you’ve checked and verified what the temperature is doing. My suggestion would be to fit an aftermarket coolant temp gauge. Drive for a bit and get some good data on your temps. That’ll tell you if have a problem that needs looking...

Also worth a search for solenoids for AW450-43LE. They are the same and often found cheaper.

My experience of both Milner and Roughtrax pattern parts is they are very poor quality next to OEM. No way I’d fit either if reliability/robustness is important. If you mostly road drive I expect they’re fine.

Interestingly there is no torque spec for putting the studs in the hub as they don’t need to be tight. Just a slight pinch up will do. If all is clean and assembled properly they are unable to come loose due to the torque applied to the nut.

Yeh agree proper installation with clean dry threads is the major factor. Loctite is not needed. I installed some of the nut huggers when I did mine for peace of mind. If you drive off-road regularly, checking these nuts should be one of the regular checks.

In which case I would suggest a cheaper option is to get an auto-electrician to build the part of the harness you need

If the Roughtrax one is the same brand as for diesel I’d stay well clear. Mine lasted a year! Look on eBay for one made by NAPA with a 5 year warranty.

The auto in a 95 80 series diesel is the A442F. This is made by Aisin Warner and used in other non-Toyota models such as Isuzu. The designation for this auto is AW450-43LE. Solenoids for the AW450-43LE can be had for significantly less than from Toyota and will fit the A442F. See here Solenoid...
