Diagnosing 1UZFE V8 overfueling in LJ70. Let the games begin...

Death by a thousand cuts indeed! Also wondering if all the old diesel was cleaned from the tank, maybe some got in the injectors, or the injectors are sticking a bit. Hopefully I'm on track now, will call first thing tomorrow for an MOT. Still need to change oil and I'm waiting on a coolant temp...

Hi all and thanks for the comments and suggestions along the way, much appreciated. Grab a coffee or beer if you want to digest this in one sitting! This one is a long-winded recap/update on sorting out the generally poor quality Lexus/Toyota V8 engine swap into the LJ70 I bought, along with...

It is a bit smoother than an American V8, down to the cams I suppose. The Lexus motor is supposed to be one of the smoothest around. Having said that, when it's cold it ticks over about 1500rpm and resonates quite loudly in that range. When it warms up and drops down to about 600 revs you can...

Diagnosing 1UZFE V8 overfueling in LJ70. Let the games begin...

The magnecors are nice but pricey - about £185, ouch. The blueprint ones are affordable and are the only aftermarket brand I have heard of, though I'm not overly keen on them. I'll still have a look for Bosch or Denso first, would prefer those. Compression test this afternoon if the weather...

Diagnosing 1UZFE V8 overfueling in LJ70. Let the games begin...

Solid advice, thanks, I'll find some caps, rotors and leads today online as it needs it for sure. It was a misty rain yesterday so the motor was covered in moisture but I didn't see any arcing elsewhere when pulling wires, but sometimes on these the boot that runs down through the head gets weak...

Diagnosing 1UZFE V8 overfueling in LJ70. Let the games begin...

Ah I was hoping it was! I taped the cut up with electrical tape and pulled the wire, the cylinder dropped but no arc from the cut. Still, need to get some wires. One other thing which I'm kind of dreading is a compression test, I really, really hope the rings are good, but I need to check just...

Quick Update II: Replaced spark plugs in the rain, runs pretty strong now but still has slight vibration around 2-3,000rpm, at idle when I pull each wire, the cylinders drop. I found one wire with a cut in it, it arced bright blue to the motor, so the spark is definitely good! I'm going to book...

LJ70 2.4 (or 1KZ 3.0) rpms on motorway, fuel economy, etc.?

Thanks guys! I'm moving along slowly, but making some progress tuning the V8 LJ70. I can't wait to drive it again, hoping to pass the MOT (vehicle inspection) this week or next. Two ECU codes left to clear... Also meant to say, yes it's standard gearbox (R151 I think, really low 1st gear) mated...

OK, situation report on the overfueling/running rich condition with the 1UZFE conversion which two specialist garages have apparently been unable to sort. I've always said I don't think it ever was running in closed loop, just limp home or open pre-set mapping. I've probably said this about...

Diagnosing 1UZFE V8 overfueling in LJ70. Let the games begin...

Ha, no problem, I figured I'd have a few things to sort when I looked under the bonnet before I bought it. It's a good way to really learn the motor before I start taking it up in the hills this winter. General things I've noticed so far: 1. clutch slave to exhaust manifold L side, very tight...

Funny you mention that, since I joined the 70 and Bundera pages there, I've been pretty jealous of the scenery, even the hot dusty parts. Anyplace that people carry a 90L water tank in the back of their rig has to be harsh! I lived in Kuala Lumpur for a little bit, closest I've been to Australia...

Me too! Hate seeing it sit. Wished it ran as well as it looks. I have two new lambda sensors and a set of plugs on order to start, and am going to weld a new bung in the down pipe where they left out the nearside lambda due to interference with the clutch slave. I suspect the engine has never...

Ah great stuff, will go that route. I just ordered a new o2 bung to weld on from ebay. I found a couple of toyota o2 sensors I think will work (front sensors, plug looks correct). Going to bite the bullet and order two of those today. Got to start somewhere, and this seems as good a point as any.

Diagnosing 1UZFE V8 overfueling in LJ70. Let the games begin...

You'll love this Ed - one of the O2 sensors is missing and the plug is just hanging next to the block. The clutch slave cylinder is in the way of the mounting for the O2 on the left side (as you sit in the car) of the motor, so they just ran a blank into the port and called it a day! I don't...

Wow, thanks everyone, some good questions here. Where to start - I'll see if I can pull diagnostics from the port on the motor this morning. I'd also like to check vacuum hose to fuel reg on the rail for any funny business. I might pull the fuse for the fuel pump and let the motor run till it...

Sure I'll get some pics out there - it's not very tidy I have to say, especially for a shop job. Yep, it has stock ECU, but checking megasquirt out, some real power gains as well, not that I need any...I'll see what Ryan is getting up to. Thanks! Keep you posted.

Hey Shayne, Yeah I'm tempted to just start replacing electronic parts, but the pockets are a little empty after buying it! Ha. I think the ignition timing is set by the ECU and timed off the crank angle sensor, not adjustable as far as I know, but will do some research on this. I see it has a...

Hi everyone, as some of you might know, I recently picked up a rather nice looking 1988 LJ70 with the Toyota 1UZFE V8 conversion - again some of you may have recognised it as one of the forum member's old LJ builds. From what little information I have been given, seems West Coast had it for a...

Hey Ben, I was chatting to you on facebook today. Well, I had the V8 LJ booked in for an annual inspection tomorrow, but I noticed it had an intermittent misfire on the way home. Well, today it is fouling all eight spark plugs like nobodys business - completely black and soot covered. Time to...

Thank ya! Needs quite a lot of little bits here and there, and a lot of electrical know-how, so looks like my learning curve is about to get a lot steeper. I found the year of the motor, 1993 printed on the ignition leads, so they are originals. It has a misfire at low revs in town, but as soon...

That's probably the best way to be! This is going to take some serious electrical and engine management know-how to get the gauges up and running. I could replace them all with VDOs or something, but want to keep the original instrument cluster. I'm sure one of the hilux/surf guys knows how to...

Well, I bought the LJ70! Just did 360 miles, needs quite a few bits doing, mainly electrical, but the paint and interior, wheels, suspension, etc. are practically new. Best of all is the sound of the 4.0 going up through the gears with the stainless exhaust... glorious! May be a few weeks before...

It was on ebay but it's ended now, not sure if advert is still visible. It's definitely a 4.0L quad-cam 32v V-8, the 1UZ-FE from the looks of it. I think the V-6 was a 3.0L, at least initially. I think West Coast did the conversion based on old posts on here actually, but haven't had much of a...

Yeah I'm not under any great illusions. I once had a 7.4l 440cu inch Plymouth Roadrunner with pistons the size of buckets and a 5.0 Mustang GT which was heavily modified with a big roller cam. Hi Beau, Yes I'm intrigued by the 1UZ motor. I wouldn't need more power from it, but saw a video of a 1,000hp twin turbo 1UZ in an Ultima GTR kit car, I think he hit 340km/h before standing on the brakes! A stock 1UZ would probably make a great motoway cruiser and the engine has a solid...

Thanks for the information. Yes the 2.4 may not be much of a change from the Jimny cruising speed, maybe a tick faster in its comfort zone.
