    Steps, rock rails, whatever...

I just ordered a compromise sill protection called a "rock rail". They weigh 25# a pair, and are remarkably good low profile protection, gaining extra clearance in the process. They are low profile, as you can see, can bear the weight of the vehicle, despite being attached to the sill, and...

Who is doing what maintenance today?

So, I bought my US spec petrol 4.5L 1996 80 series January last year, and since that time, I've been busy replacing everything consumable and degradable. The PO had basically refilled fuel and changed oil, but nothing else for 20 years. The last month or so it developed a shudder, which would...

    Romania 2016

After a long hiatus from the board, I'm still alive and kicking. Let me talk to my lovely bride and see if she might be interested. We are marrying off our youngest daughter in the US the last week of June, so don't know if finances will be recovered by then.

    Steps, rock rails, whatever...

I'm also in the market for rock sliders. I took my wife out off-roading this last Sunday, and she loved it, minus the climbing in and out of the rig. This provides me a great excuse for a pair of sliders. Plus, I hit a rock which slightly damaged my exhaust and cracked a flange, which added a...

    Petrol Land cruiser 80 series

No kidding. It doesn't fit correctly, and the first time you go through some heavy bush or have a slight impact, that thing will bend back into your body work and create more damage. I've heard them referred to as "damage multipliers".

    Petrol Land cruiser 80 series

The 3FE series 80s are low powered, easy to work on and dead nuts reliable. The 1FZ-FE engine has a couple minor issues that need looked after, specifically the PHH (Pesky Heater Hose) and the head gasket. Either engine can make it to 400,000 miles with proper maintenance.

Trying to talk my husband into buying this 1990 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado LJ71 Diesel

You've made me miss my 70 series, now. One more thing to get, I guess.

Trying to talk my husband into buying this 1990 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado LJ71 Diesel

I love the 70s. A mite underpowered for most, it'll get the job done if you aren't in a hurry. They are also not as refined as 80s and up, but most rural people do not care for that. I know I don't.

    Snorkel hole size

Regardless of the actual size of the hole, be advised that in this case, drilling oversize is a Good Thing. And that goes for the bolts as well; there is no "rule" that the snorkel holes have to be a tight fit, and slightly oversized holes make it a lot easier to make the snorkel fit the wing...

I can't argue with any of that. Will put some brain power into it, but travelling individual, while meeting up at Clive's place sounds fun as well. I really like just being with my wife on the road. :)

    Romania 2016

From where we live, Budapest is a natural halfway point. And racing to get there in an 80 series makes no sense whatsoever. I think a relatively slow trip sounds nice.

A Series 80 build that's "bigger on the inside"

I just received a new filler cap in the mail. I expect the canister should be here by the end of the week. Each day I look at an old-fashioned map to see what new trails I can take to and/or from work.

I'm a tentative "yes" with one caveat. My wife is an anti-camper, which means we'll be engaging non-camping accomodations en route, should we be able to go.

A Series 80 build that's "bigger on the inside"

Here are some snaps from my daily commute. The downside of living here for some is the extremely rural nature of the terrain. Which to me is an upside.

You were less than an hour from me. This time of year, the campgrounds near Regensburg are a better deal; the Dutch have largely returned home and the Danube is wonderful. A Series 80 build that's "bigger on the inside"

I think I've found the culprit as far as the hamfist shippers breaking the cap. Seems my charcoal canister is either plugged or the check valves are stuck. As a result, my gas cap is a bear to get off, I'm having hard starts and am noticing a lack of "umph" going up mountain trails. The...

Thanks! Well, today was the big day. Drove down to Regensburg and met with the moving company, which hired Polish movers. They looked extremely sheepish when I approached them. Delivery should be soon. Oddly enough, I went on a walk around my new neighborhood in our German village, where I...

    Petrol or diesel?

4.5 petrol engines should run 400k miles, or 600k km easy. They are actually designed to go 600k miles/900k km, provided you hold up your end of the maintenance. The PHH or "Pesky Heater Hose" is a one time replacement with a silicone unit for o/a $30. The head gasket is 100% an overheating...
