    1989 Factory Reset-ish

There may be a fuel sediment trap attached to drivers side chassis rail. Would recommend draining and cleaning out. Mine was half full of water last time I checked which was about 5 years since last done

    2H to 12H-T Upgrade

Hello Tony, The motor from NZ didn’t work out. There is an HJ61 in London storage for sale but it’s too much so I’m back to considering options of a 1HD-T conversion or just stick with the 2H?? It would probably be more sensible to stay as is and just get a nice 80 too

    Missing alternator! Suggested replacement?

Hello 89Cruiser, had the same aggro finding a new alternator for my 60 and getting the existing one rebuilt. Presume it’s a 24V one? They have internal or external voltage regulators ( your is probably internal being 1989 ) and will probably have a vacuum pump mounted on the rear. I would try...

    2H to 12H-T Upgrade

Currently discussing options with a contact in New Zealand. They are usually 24V whereas Australia are 12V. Not a showstopper but nice to have 24V. Ideally purchasing a whole car to ship over. Also looking into 1HD-T swap feasibility now!

4.2 TD - starts but cuts out

Sounds like fuel starvation. Is there a fuel filter in the fuel tank? Check fuel flow at all junctions between fuel tank to engine.

    2H to 12H-T Upgrade

Been considering this for many years but I now have a realistic opportunity to import a 12 H-T engine with all ancillaries which is 24V so compatible with my HJ60. The only thing that seems to be missing is the starter motor so not a big deal. Before I go all in though could we discuss anything...

    Simon Holton - parts

Used Simon last 5 yrs ago - he was still at Steven Eagell then. Since then as Frank said I ask for discount at the local Toyota dealer - as it’s a historic vehicle and that I always use Toyota parts blah blah and they have offered anything up to 40% discount depending what the part is. So I...

HZJ75 Troopie Body Repair Pannels -

I sourced all those for my 60 from Cruiserworld. Mostly before brexit and import duty! It may be worth going over to collect them if you have a big list.

    Milner leaf springs

I used Rubber bushes x 24 which were £10 each from Toyota but well worth it.

    Milner leaf springs

Yes. They lasted 3 months. One spring cracked and they were very harsh so got replaced with OME light duty springs and Nitro Charger Shocks which gave a 50mm lift. These are still excellent today - 6 years later

    2h to 1hz N/A engine swap

If the gearbox and tfr box are retained then both front and rear props can stay too so worth consideration and probably what I would plan to do. So a new bell housing and relocate engine mounts sounds doable to me. Would check that the new engine sump wouldn’t foul on the steering gear and the...

    Ben’s 1989 HJ60 GX 2H Manual

Lower tailgate had become so rusty I was expecting it to fall off. Took a while to find a good one to replace it with. And After several days of work changing from a champagne colour to Toyota 153, I replaced it today: Need a new number plate as the holes are in different locations which...

How long have you had yours?

My first cruiser was a BJ40 which I bought in 2000 and had for 6 years and loved it. Then bought an HJ61 with every option. Absolutely loved it and regret not still having it now. Bought two 80’s after that which were Stonking too. Have had “Tembo” the HJ60 for over 7 years now and have grown...

    Ben’s 1989 HJ60 GX 2H Manual

Today had a fight with the NSR brake drum to try to find out why that side was binding Had to screw in 2 long M8’s to eventually pull it off. The brake shoe retainer spring on one side had come loose (the spring fell off). The cylinder was sticky on one side too and a brake shoe was bent...

    Ben’s 1989 HJ60 GX 2H Manual

Backlash is about 10 degrees each way from centre when rotating prop shaft by hand. I drive sympathetically to it so don’t notice it normally but it’s there if you suddenly lift off or apply throttle quickly. Will need to look at the transfer box to see if it’s just wear & tear or something to...

Today removed rear prop which I noticed was out of phase at about 45 degrees. There had been some vibration which I was Investigating. Both UJ’s had no play whatsoever, so cleaned them up, and refitted the shaft in Phase. ( quite tricky to line up by eye when underneath so used some straight...

Who is doing what maintenance today?

Drained water separator, replaced lift pump and installed OEM fuel filter on the 60. Cracked injector pipes to bleed air out. Took front wheels off to investigate a clanking noise when going over bumps but couldn’t find anything. It will have to go on the shaker at the mot place to see what...

Ok so next up on the todo list is to replace the drivers door and both upper & lower tailgates. The replacements will need painting in Toyota grey 153 which I am quite confident about doing myself. I hope to restore the panels that come off over the winter and either keep as spares or sell...

Thinking about a test drive in a 100 series

Great thanks Geoff. It’s whether I can get the tent inside or not which is 2150mm. So similar to the 60 it will have to have one end sitting on top of the centre console. Was hoping it might be a bit longer but it’s manageable. Thanks very much for checking

Great info Jon (and Andy before). I don’t like the LPG conversions so would steer clear but could add a sub tank if range was an issue.

Thinking about a test drive in a 100 series

Could someone with a 100 please do me a favour and measure the distance from back of centre console to the tailgate please? Forgot to do that and want to see if it’s big enough to fit in what I need. Thanks very much

So 12ish do you recon Jon? Just thinking about Range- I would guess it has about 100litre tank. Will have to look it up.

Thinking about a test drive in a 100 series

I do like the v8 models. One I am considering is group M emissions so £730 TDK per year which is 3x the 60. What realistically should I factor in for MPG around town on super unleaded?

Thinking about a test drive in a 100 series

Lovely interior Andy, Engine bay not bad but underneath and bodywork was very rusty. I don’t want a second money pit! Perhaps I should wait for a 2007 model to show up with 10 yrs less rust then get it treated immediately. Even more undecided now so will wait and see
  42. Ben Stratford

Where do you get one? Imports/UK

60 owner in Devon should you like to see one. The 60 is an old school cruiser as Andy said with moderate performance but with no electrical complexity, no turbo, no ECU, EGR, DPF etc that modern cars suffer. They are great to work on. RUST is the concern. Cheers, ben

Thanks guys, yes it’s a GX with std suspension and nice cloth seats. Didn’t consider the ifs not having a diff lock - thanks for that. Yes it’s rust that is the main concern so I’m not getting my hopes up at all. Will report findings! Cheers ben

Thinking about a test drive in a 100 series

Ok so I want to test drive a 100 series and carry out a pre purchase inspection. Could someone advise how to engage low range and engage the 3x diff locks please. What sequence should be adopted? Is it the same as an 80? My 60 doesn’t have diff locks and I haven’t had an 80 for 10 yrs now so...
