Getting the best from your hand brake

Picked up a set of Chris’ extended dog bones last week and fitted them. Big difference for my handbrake . Still bedding the new parts in but a great deal better.

Getting the best from your hand brake

Thanks very much, I can’t wait to have a working hand brake. It’s does seem amazing that in such a tough vehicle they fitted this system, no truck is perfect I guess. I’m having an engineer friend cut a set of extended dog bones for me as my welding skills are zero. From this thread it seems a...

Getting the best from your hand brake

@Chris - Great guide, thank you for posting it up, it enabled me to replace shoes, discs, bell crank units, all springs, shoe wires and horribly fiddly stuff. I'm at the adjustment stage and I must be a bit hard of thinking . I've slackened off the hand brake at the 10mm bolt in the...

    The dreaded handbrake

Finally got the calipers and discs off. It didn't look awful inside (to me) is this worn section of the inner disc wear and tear or is this the result of the truck being driven with the handbrake on? Just interested. I'll look to replace discs, shoes, dogbones, handbrake shoe wires and bell...

    Removing rear caliper

Cheers Trevor! I’ve left it on axle stands until tomorrow as I only had an hour to get into it. Didn’t want to give it any force in case I’d forgotten something. @Shayne - yep, would be nice to have someone on call :) however I’ve found this forum is pretty good at being the next best thing.

    Removing rear caliper

Starting the handbrake refurb and have got as far as removing the caliper. I’m only wanting to have a look under the rotor at the parts that might need replacing so I want to avoid taking the caliper apart. Can I remove the caliper by undoing the two 17mm bolts from the backing plate or do I...

    The dreaded handbrake

Thanks for this, dreading what's underneath mine as I'm not sure when the rear shoes where last changed or what state the whole systems in. I'm hoping WD40 and a few stud taps with a hammer will loosen anything  Sounds like you've got yours well sorted, did you replace the discs/rotors...

How much of a PITA would drilling a hole in the backing plate be? Or would that weaken it too much?

    The dreaded handbrake

I've only traced a picture from another thread on here and straightened it up so don't take my drawing as 100% accurate. If I do alter the dog bone I wanted to produce a full sized, accurate drawing that others with the same issue could just download, print out and use as a template. Maybe post...

    The dreaded handbrake

The handbrake on my dad's 80 has always been a bit weak and problematic but this time it seems to have become non-existent. I remember reading somewhere that it is a bit of a weak point on 80s. Is it a case of just keeping on top of it or is there aftermarkets kits or parts to beef it up a bit...
