Well after catching up with this thread about BT,Sky, TV licences etc it’s good to know I’m not alone doing battle too, I’m surprised nobody has mentioned British Gas - until now!
So there I was acting as executor for a relative’s estate and dealing with their property which became empty in Feb...
I was lucky enough to have the use of a workshop with a ramp and there weren’t any neighbours to annoy either so November worked out ok!
I’m just struggling to get the image of your string vest incident out of my head now
It was November when I did mine so no shorts and t shirt for me, still got rotten though! The sun must have burnt a weird pattern on your feet through the holes in your crocs!!
The underbody on mine wasn’t too bad so no problems at all using the needle gun and it took the surface corrosion off...
Good point Tractionman! I should have made it clearer that needle guns are ok on the floor panels, body crossmembers and the like on the underside but a definite no no on outer body panels!
I can think of better ways to spend a week than getting filthy under a Land Cruiser but I’d certainly use...
I didn’t even know electric needle guns existed! I used an air powered one on my 100 last November and having tried grinders etc over the years they’re definitely the way to go, great on the chassis and no problems using one on the body either.
Ear defenders are a must but definitely not a job...
The replacement belts for the small sanders don’t last long at all on chassis work so would be a very expensive option! an old wood chisel is good for scraping and getting into tight corners plus a chipping hammer comes in handy for tackling any of the really crusty stuff on the chassis that can...
The best way to check that is to chuck it in the bin! but the good news is that with the exception of a bulb those breathers are just about the cheapest part you’ll ever buy for a Landcruiser! your front diff has one as well so hang the expense and order two!
EBay as Buller mentioned or...
I had a similar problem a few years ago but I only lost 5th and with no warning at all. Eventually I found it was one of the temp sensors in the box, as far as I can remember one is for the high temp warning light and the other prevents the box changing into 5th until the fluid is up to a pre...
I got mine from West Coast off road, just as Tractionman has described, they come complete with their own studs plus the nuts you need to bolt them onto your hubs. Not made from chinesium so good quality, bolt straight on and no issues with vibration etc.
A pal of mine has changed to an electric Audi (Q4 I think) and reckons it’s the dogs wotsits ( or as predictive text put it, the dogs wetsuits!) he regularly makes a return trip to the West Mids on a single charge and reckons an overnight charge at home costs him about £15 compared to a tank of...
Only just spotted your post Mr S!
I had the rear pipes capped off on my 100 some years ago, my air con guy had some stainless steel blanks turned up already so simply crimped them in place, low pressure at the rear of the engine bay and high pressure at the left hand front (behind the headlamp...
It’s 2 metres from the rear of the centre console to the lower tailgate Ben, if you have the front seats adjusted right back as I do you would lose about 40 mm off that if measured at the same height as the console, the higher you go up the backrest the more you’ll lose!
So now you need to tell...
Another vote for Chill Out if you live in the North West! I’ve been using him for my Amazon for about 8 years after West Coast off Road recommended him.
So just to update to the 2023/4 figures, band K (201-225) which still includes vehicles with higher emissions if registered pre March 2006 has increased to £395 and band M (over 255) will be £695.
The only caveat is that I couldn’t find the latest figures on Gov.Uk so this is from Heycar.
I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with Falkens Brett, I’ve been running 275/65/18 Wildpeaks on my 100 for 12 months, , mainly on road use and towing, no complaints so far!
As Bob says, jacking the body up a touch will give you a bit more clearance, I did mine that way a few years ago, it still takes some juggling but it does come out.
Good luck with it!
I’ve copied my reply to a similar post in 2020 which might just help someone out! I should still have the part no for the loom if you need it
“I had a similar problem on my 2004 5 speed 100 a few years ago, it suddenly stopped locking up, there were no warning signs and I didn’t have the...
As Derek has already said, get them fabricated, find yourself an old school body shop that maybe does restoration work, it’s a straightforward job but it will develop once they cut into it, they always do!!
Good luck
Without wishing to state the obvious, you need to see what’s available within your budget, you’re going to be looking at vehicles that are around 20 years old. They all need work to keep on top of them so your choice is to get the best example you can afford that’s been well maintained or buy...
25 mpg won’t be a problem on good A roads and motorways, all depends on the condition of your vehicle and the weight of your right foot!
Mines a 5 speed but from what Gav has said there isn’t much difference between the 4 or 5 so I wouldn’t discount a 4 speed if you find a decent one.
Everyone...
You’re right about the lab Shayne! after cleaning a ton of crap out of the inlet manifold on the Amazon the egr valve went straight in the bin. I replaced it with the Toyota part that’s basically a spacer they fit in non EU countries and it sails through the mot on emissions every year!
I don’t know if your Collie has the same set up Mick but a few years ago my Amazon stopped selecting 5th completely and with no warning.
The “experts” told me it needed a new ecu (over £1100 at the time) but after some digging I found that the wiring loom in the box has two integral temp sensors...
I think the Honda is way too new to delete the cat Shayne, cars registered 1992 or earlier don’t have any emissions figures on the V5 so are only subject to a visual check at mot.
As Gary has said removing a cat is now an automatic fail and it will need one anyway to get the emissions right...
Have you ever thought of putting all your superb write ups into a manual Bob? (like Haynes but better!)
I changed the filler pipe on my 100 a couple of years ago and hit all the same problems but I was lucky enough to salvage one of the two bolts on the x member. The splash shield had also done...
Thanks for that Keith, I was kicking a few ideas round last night after I added the post and came to the same conclusion! We had a 4 hour drive home last Thursday on some very wet roads and ran into a torrential downpour about 30 mins from home!
The Amazon had a tow bar on when I bought it but...
Evening all, I seem to have got myself a little electrical gremlin! Earlier today I parked up and locked the Amazon as usual and returned about 20 mins later to find both dipped beams were on. I checked the headlamp switch but it was in the off position. Main beam and flash worked as normal but...
First things first Graham, get the rear bumper and spare wheel out of the way so you can have a proper look!
Once you’ve got over the sorry state of the rear bumper support you’ll have a far better idea of how bad the corrosion is.
Shayne has suggested sourcing from a breaker but unless you can...
It’s sounding like whatever comes up that’s decent will have to be “the one” but to answer your question on road tax I went from an 05 120 to a 54 100 and the road tax was exactly the same! As far as I know Toyota managed to sneak 04 &O5 100’s into a lower emissions group, someone on here...
On this day 80 years ago the May blitz on Liverpool had started, It was in Gerry’s sights because of all the convoys that came in from the US and Canada (about 4000 in all)
I listened to a programme on radio 4 this morning called Broadcasting House which had a recording made by a fire watcher...
I didn’t need to renew the pipes on the 120 when I changed the calipers, assuming the pipes are ok just give the unions a couple of soakings in WD or the like and leave it for a few days then see if they’ll crack off, at least that way you’ll know if you need to replace them before you start the...
I couldn’t do without the vehicle either Juddian so I replaced the two fronts on my 120 some years ago and then on the Amazon last October, both with Budweg callipers from Brakes International. The ones for the Amazon were £90 +vat each, they’re exchange so there’s a surcharge of £30 per...
Well Chris, we haven’t met but seeing your post has just knocked the wind right out of my sails!!
Thats one hell of a crap hand you’ve been dealt and all credit to you for sharing it! As so many others have already said attitude is everything if your going to beat this.
If it’s any comfort...
I felt the same when I got my 120 after always towing with a manual, it changed down sooner than I expected and was sometimes reluctant to change back up to 5th, it was a 2005 so the same 5 speed transmission you have.
As Chris has already said , if the box is constantly changing up and down it...
I’ve had the Ironman kit on since 2016 Andy and no problems so far, and like you I didn’t fancy doing battle with all the corroded fittings once I started work on it.
We’ve had twin axles for years and they’re a great tow, but I’m 6ft 4 so kept away from the fixed beds as they were always...
Andy, the part no for the insert is T58839-60040, description is “cover console”, £17 +vat when I bought mine.
I tend to keep the boot space fairly empty most of the time and the 3rd row seats are out as well, once I removed the AHC I found the rear end a bit harsh so I went for some softer...
Perk 423 If you haven’t done it already you can get rid of the lights on the dash by removing a fuse by one of the footwell kick panels ( there may be 2, it’s a few years since I did mine!)
Toyota also do an insert to replace the AHC switch on the centre console, ideal for car park cash! I...
I don’t know how I managed it but my original post ended up in the insurance forum! so I’ll try again!
I’ve been having a clear out in the toy shop so I’ve got some AHC parts to get rid of, height sensors, accumulator, spheres and the pump/reservoir. They system was working ok when I removed...
Well for a bit of lockdown excitement I’ve been having a clear out in the toy shop so I’ve got some decent AHC parts to get rid of, height sensors, accumulator, spheres and the pump/reservoir. They system was working ok when I removed them but they’ve been lurking in a box in a dark corner...
