Recommendations for the oil in an HZJ78 (Troopy) gearbox and differential, please.

Just to emphasise: the rear diff oil is specced there as GL-5 for LSD.

    Bumper spots.

I`ve recently fitted front fogs to my 95. No switch for the front ones that I could see, but there were some spare plugs which I assume were for them. I spliced into the front side light feed. (that is already fuse protected) Took that to an illuminated switch in the cab. (that switch needs an...

    Bumper spots.

The vehicle has switches and wiring from factory as standard, but the actual lights were an option and not fitted? You haven`t overlooked the obvious? (I frequently do:blush:) Is there a fuse in place? Relay present? Doubtful they would both be fitted if not needed. Guessing they will only...

HOT/COLD Climate head gasket, truth or myth

I remember reading about this some time ago, but can`t remember where. If I recall correctly. There are some channels in the head and block that are there as part of the coolant jacket, but to keep a flow past of the head it isn`t desirable for all of these channels to join up as that could...

Anyone else blocked out of the site?

No problem using Chrome for other sites. Just this one. I`m currently using Edge here, but Chrome for everything else. It works, but clearly summat is out of kilter somewhere.

Anyone else blocked out of the site?

I normally use Google Chrome browser. Been getting "Forbidden" on that for this site. Cleared cookies, and have no problems with getting access to other sites from Chrome. Using Microsoft Edge, I`m straight into it. Is there some hitch with this site "talking to" Chrome?

    Power Upgrade new 79

As above. Black smoke from a diesel is probably unburnt fuel.

    75 series 4wd not engaging

No answers from me, sorry, but some thoughts: 2 wheel drive still operating OK? Probably nothing wrong inside the box then, I would guess. I would be crawling around underneath looking at the shift-levers. Does the 4 wheel drive selector lever in the cab feel the same as before? Is that...

    Left or Right? Why?

I can`t think of any reason why one side would be better than another. Not trying to start a "Big-Endian" vs "Little -Endian" war, honest. :)

    Left or Right? Why?

Just an idle thought. Most (all?) the builds I`ve seen of overland builds, mostly Troopies seem to have seating on the left and larger cabinets on the right. Is there a reason for this, or just coincidence, or ???

    HZJ 79 gearbox

A couple of general comments first: As I understand it (subject to correction) the additives in GL4 and GL5 are different, and will affect the wear in gearboxes. If your gear box has already suffered wear related damage then changing oils won`t make much difference now. If the synchro is worn...

    Seeking direction for selling

Looks very nice. RHD might be an issue for some, but not impossible to get past. I am sure that someone in the UK would bite your hand off for that vehicle.

    75 Troopy lots`n`lots

Thanks Gr8Yota. Yep, LiFePO give a lot more bang for their size, but I am still fretting at their initial cost against (heavier and shorter lived) batteries......I know it makes a lot of sense, but I haven`t quite talked myself into it yet. I`ll look again. I`m thinking of the microwave for...

Thread for UK owners of Troopys - 75s & 78s

Cheers, for that Charlie. On my 75 the original tank is on the RHS, not the rear, so that TR58 would not be a straight swop. Having now put my spare wheel on the door, there is space there......but the wheel carrier might need to see an angle grinder.

Thread for UK owners of Troopys - 75s & 78s

All very nice looking vehicles! Couple of questions if I may: How are the side awning attached? I can imagine riv-nuts into the skin of the bodywork, or maybe bolts all the way into the interior? And, @Bmonck what is your auxiliary fuel tank? An ARB or similar ex-Aus or ??/ I`ve now...

    75 Troopy lots`n`lots

Thanks for that. I am interested in your thinking. I`m leaning towards a24v Durite split charger relay, so the vehicle batteries are always balanced, and I`m not taking power from just one at 12v as at present. Two 12v batteries in series in the back...somewhere... 230v mains inverter, (a...

    75 Troopy lots`n`lots

Thanks, Firewout. A manual would be very useful. :) Looked around the wiring a bit more yesterday. There is a live from the pos on the first starter battery to a split charger. This leads to a (now dead) 12v battery in the rear. The cable is pretty small so it can`t be much of a current...

    75 Troopy lots`n`lots

Well, my previous post seems wrong already..... 12v with 24v starter? Maybe not. Playing around with a multimeter led me to investigate a bit. So, the rear lights are 24v and the alternator is marked 24v. So, it appears to be a 24v system throughout, except for a split charge system leading...

    75 Troopy lots`n`lots

Thanks for the replies. I`ve now put a new rear door on, with tyre mount, 76 Troopy spec. New "Arcasting Racer" wheel sourced too. Yep, expensive, but a steel framed alloy, so fingers crossed that is a one-off purchase. Been scratching my head looking at the wiring on it. 12v with 24v...

    70 Series Rear Doors

And a quick reply from Frans at All American Imports: The 71 doors are different, so the second-hand ones near me are not useful. Oh well, so I`m probably gonna go with the option of a new rear door rather than a bumper with swing outs.

    70 Series Rear Doors

My 75 has the spare mounted under the rear, I`d like to mount it on a rear swing-away or on the rear door. The current rear door doesn`t seem to have enough internal strengthening Swing away mount on a custom bumper may be ok, but heavy. I`ve seen that the later rear doors will be OK, but...

1989 LJ70 - black smoke and loss of power - help needed

LJ70, I`ve no knowledge of but as a general case: White "smoke" is water vapour, (or diesel vapour when starting up from cold) blue smoke is burnt oil, black smoke is unburnt excess diesel. If air filter is clear, then possibly bad injectors, worn pump, injection timing out?

    75 Troopy lots`n`lots

Cheers! :) Which roof on your Troopy? And a question about the awning please: Is that the 270deg one? How is it attached to body? Below the roof line I assume, and is it bolted through or with riv-nuts, and/or reinforcement plates or ??

    75 Troopy lots`n`lots

Hi all. I`m a new Troopy owner and will up for any advice from you all. I`m looking to do a bit of touring with it. Off- road for sure, but not into "winch challenge" territory. (Each to their own, but cars are for driving not pulling) What suspension have I got? Yeah, sounds dumb, but from...

    Hi

Hi from me too. I`m UK and France based, owned a Colorado 3.0 auto for a few years and now just bought a 75 Troopy 4.2. I`ve visited this site a few times, and benefited from some good info. Now got around to registering and saying "Hi!". I do have a few questions about various things, but...
