Autocamp Marco Polo rooftent for sale

Hi, This neat little roof tent lived on top of my 80 for a number of years, and has performed very well. The Landcruiser has gone to a new home (hi Lorin!) and it's replacement is a Mercedes 814da which we'll be sleeping inside of, rather than on top of, so this is up for sale. The Marco Polo...

In Scotland on way to Lincomb need some advice

Mussy, Something looks wrong in those pictures; I'm pretty sure there shouldn't be a bolt through the metal cap (and presumably into the cv). I've no idea what the clearance is inside the plastic cap, but perhaps the thickness of that bolt head was enough to push the plastic cap off when the cv...

Convert 12 valve to 24 valve. Idle musing......

I'd agree with you Jon, state of tune matters, perhaps second only to weight of right foot... Lorin, if you're willing to take the comparison Ian came up with between his manual 24v and my auto 12v on a heavily laden & relatively high speed trip as any sort of real-world guide, then don't spend...

    VC at MOT test.

I don't think driving off the rollers will prove to be any test of the VC at all - they drive two wheel drive cars off the rollers all day long... All the best, Toby

Advice required on better grip in snow - keep getting stuck!

Even if it's got auto freewheeling hubs, don't they require you to reverse in 4wd before they engage? You shouldn't really be struggling to drive in 6" of snow. Might be worth checking your tyre pressures as well - if they're rock hard you'll be making it more difficult for yourself... Best...

    80 pickup

    So, Snatch.........

Hi Steven, I'm sorry, but I'm afraid Jon is right and you're wrong; go back and read the last part of your argument again - you say the load on each rope heading back to the car will be 2154.5kgs - fair enough, so the the rope going into the winch has only 2154.5kgs tension on it, in which case...

Evocative picture of the day / week

Hi Ben, I don't know how they got him in there, though this wasn't the only camel we saw being carried this way and he seemed quite happy in there. I expect the loading technique probably involved lots of shouting and arm waving but little in the way of lifting... All the best, Toby 1990 HDJ80...

Help needed - Which handbrake shoes...?

Hi Lorin, In a word: yes. They are definitely different sizes pre and post August '92 build. The later ones fitting the later larger diameter disc/drum unit you've upgraded to. Might it be worth having a look in there to check they are actually worn out before ordering? There are lots of...

    windows

Hi, Don't rely on those sliding windows, tinted or not, being any sort of security. As supplied by Toyota, they are VERY easy to open from outside the car without smashing them or cutting the seal - I won't say how for obvious reasons, but I know to my cost that it's not that big a secret...

    Loss of power

Hi Lorin, Could be a turbo or injector issue, but still sounds more like fuel problem, quite possibly an air leak, to me. If the fuel filter was recenly replaced (you mentioned a recent service) maybe a seal wasn't seated quite right and has been sucked in a bit causing an air leak? This could...

    H.I.D Conversions

Chas, As I understand it, you'll still need to pass the beam pattern check as in the current MoT, but if you've retro fitted HIDs to a car without headlamp washers and a levelling system you'll be failed. All the best, Toby 1990 HDJ80 1994 HDJ80

    Loss of power

Lorin, If changing the fuel filter doesn't help matters it could be worth checking the pick-up screen in the fuel tank. The rear seat needs to come out, then remove or make a suitable incision in the carpet and remove the cover plate above the fuel tank. You'll then be able to pull out and...

Welding a broken front diff housing?

I'm with Declan on this one; the front axle casing isn't a casting, it should be fine with gas or mig welding. As Andrew says this isn't unheard of when using caster correction bushes and using lots of front suspension travel... Best of luck, Toby 1990 HDJ80 1994 HDJ80

400bhp LJ78 About to be built

Interesting, do you know what drive train components he's thinking of using? IIRC the orange Devon one had a normally aspirated Supra motor, so whilst way more powerful than the stock motor wouldn't be quite as extreme as this... Doubtless there are a few with 450+bhp in the middle east...

    hole in my air box

Chas, I think you should have a clip-on metal dust collector bowl and rubber or felt gasket under there - I'd stay out of the deep water until you've rectified that! All the best, Toby 1990 HDJ80 1994 HDJ80

    Suspension options for 80s

Jon, this is a very good point; in theory at least, extended panhards cost travel (or at least increase rubbing) and do nothing for handling, whilst installing a drop bracket to the chassis or preferably a lift bracket to the axle (to keep the roll centre closer to stock) won't cost travel and...

Diff damage - MOT 2 wheel brake test

Hi Nathan, As Jon says this won't have caused any harm unless your car has a viscous coupling in the centre diff. AFAIK the 100 series didn't come with a viscous coupling whereas the post aug.'92 80 series did. Even if you put a viscous equipped 80 on an MoT roller brake tester I doubt you'd...

    Winch isolating switch rating?

Hi Trevor, I can't be much help on what you should get, but don't be tempted to use the motorsport cut-off switches with the red removable key like the first couple of items on the page Andy linked to. A well-known Oxfordshire 4x4 preparation company fitted one with the winch they sold to my...

    axle diff lock retro fit

Hi Wayne, As Jon says above, whilst you'll get away with putting auto 4.1 ratio diffs into a manual if you don't want high speed cruising or you're fitting taller tyres, manual 3.7 ratio diffs in an auto won't work at all well - you'll probably end up overheating the transmission. AFAIK it...

    35"+ aggresive tyres. simex etc.

Hi Chris, Ian, yes, we measured my 35x10.50x16 Silverstone MT 117 Extremes and they were a shade over 33.5". In fairness these were part worn, but there's no way they were a true 35" new. This does seem to be fairly common practice though; I'm told a brand new 36" Simex ET only measures 35". I...
