Original Half moon valve cover seal - doesn't fit new head

Yes, it's an easy turning job on a lathe. Any Engineering Shop should be able to make one. It's easier if they have the head on the bench and the oversize original to copy. The hole at the back of the head is to allow the camshaft bearings to be line-bored. The boring bar has to run exactly...

Original Half moon valve cover seal - doesn't fit new head

Before fitting the new head, take it to a 'Job Shop' and get them to turn an alloy plug for the hole. It should be milled flush with the top gasket face. Where are you ?? It's the sort of job that people bring to me (Edinburgh area). Bob.

    Rear Hub Axle Oil Seals

Oh dear, I had forgotten that little 'got you' ! Been there done that and in my case I stretched the inner seal retainer so it was loose on the shaft - another order to Toyota! I had to build & strip the half shafts a few times before getting the retainer and ABS rings in the right place. The...

ABS Sensor Welded Solid — Removal Tips or Suggestions?

Been there, done that ! If memory serves (it was a long time ago) I soaked the surrounding area in Plus Gas (other release fluids are available) then gripped the flange with the bolt hole in a pair of gland pliers and very carefully tried to twist the sensor trying to rotate left & right. It...

    Amazon decal

I tried to get one of those shiny silver "Land Cruiser" decals for my 2001 '100' from Toyota. I was told it wasn't a Toyota part but was applied at 'point of entry' by the Importer. I haven't found a source of them either (but I haven't looked very hard - there are bigger problems to fix first...

I had a 1500 Corsair, my first 'proper' car with separate front seats and a floor shift (my dad had Consuls - bench seats and 3-speed column change!). The Corsair eventually rusted away and was sold to a Farmer for £30 - to be replaced by . . A Sunbeam Rapier in metallic gold with a black...

Yes, Johnny rode a Harley. I also listen to sounds of the 70s while in the workshop and Bob Harris is the perfect replacement for Johnny. The Johnny &Tiggy double act was good during the Covid lockdown.

    Radiator replacement

Remove the cooling fan and fan shroud to give some clearance. You will probably find a wad of rubbish trapped between the engine rad and the air-con rad. Its worth removing the engine rad periodically in order to maintain good airflow. Bob.

    Cheap heating for LCC members.

Unfortunately, it's too small for all the tools & 'stuff' I've accumulated ! I have far too many projects on the go. Who said retirement was a relaxing time. My own fault really. That's 90-Series transfer box being worked on - on the bench. Bob.

    Cheap heating for LCC members.

I installed an 8Kw cheap Chinese diesel heater in my workshop. I run it on central heating oil (28 sec Kerosene). It does the job but it's a noisy blighter and I had to bore a hole through the brick wall for the exhaust (which runs at 186 degrees C). It's not a bad solution but the old...

Glad Land Cruisers don't adopt new technologies

    Transfer box enquiry

So you want to build a manual box from an auto. . . It's a strip-down job as the two selector shafts are shorter in a manual and they would have to be swapped from the old manual box. You would miss synchro in a manual So that would have to be swapped over. Remove the additional Low detector...

    Transfer box enquiry

The TBs are basically the same on autos & manuals. The differences are: 1. On an auto, the two selector shafts stick out the front. The transfer lever is mounted on an extension piece at the rear of the auto gearbox. On a manual, the shafts are internal with the transfer lever mounted on a...

  41. BobMurphy

cranking but not starting. Help me diagnose

If you've done all that, a bit of air should clear very quickly. I doubt air in the system is the problem. Are you getting diesel at the injectors (slacken the connections on two of them) ?? You need fuel, air and compression - which of them is missing (maybe more than one!) ?? Bob.
  42. BobMurphy

cranking but not starting. Help me diagnose

Pumping the primer pump doesn't work well if the air/diesel can't go anywhere - the whole system becomes pressurised. Unclip the pump output hose, hold a container under the outlet and pump away - you should get a gush of diesel fairly quickly. If you don't, you know which part of the system to...

Differential lock in HL and LL

Use of H, HL and LL?

When you are in 'LL' and turn the 'diff lock' switch on you should see a Red four-wheel symbol on the dash - just like that Amber one but with the cross in the centre of the rear axle. Are you getting that?? If not, I'm afraid your rear diff locker needs looking at (he says, diplomatically). For...

    Timingmarks

It's the camshaft that determines whether it's on the compression or exhaust stroke - it (camshaft) runs at half engine speed. So, with both camshaft and crankshaft marks aligned the crank and camshaft are in harmony. The diesel injector pump marks must also be aligned so that the injectors fire...
