Sorry folks the video is now ready for public viewing. @Beau. No the breaks are faulty, ABS kicks in at very low speed when vehicle is about to stop

Help with braking system error codes

My ABS light is always on and after speaking with Chris at the Adventure Overland Show I'm try to make sense of some error codes having followed the steps set out in the service manual in section BR-25 It seems fairly clear that I have multiple errors but I'm struggling to make sense of them...

My front diff is on the way out and I need a plan.

The mechanic runs a modified 80 Series himself and I have full confidence in him and yes Toyota seals have been ordered. What I do know for sure is that he'll do a better job than I would:-) I do take your points though.

My front diff is on the way out and I need a plan.

Thanks for the tips Chris, but on this occasion it will going to a garage. I've only got one day to get it fixed before it has to be working again and I can't afford any downtime. Next time maybe :-)

My front diff is on the way out and I need a plan.

Thank you Towpack and Chris for the suggestions. A diff is on its way from Karl.

My front diff is on the way out and I need a plan.

Long time since I last visited, hi everyone. My front diff is giving me cause for concern. Matt Savage took a look at it last year and noticed that there was a lot of play in the front drive shaft. He was quite sure that one set of bearings were knackered and the other set were beyond...

Low level vibration. Failing alternator or front diff?

Hi Jon, I'd say that the diff noise has gotten gradually louder over the last year or so. It's noticeable when I've got my foot on the gas but not when I'm coasting or decelerating. Very puzzled by the electrics.

Low level vibration. Failing alternator or front diff?

Recently I have become aware of some low level vibration when I'm cruising at about 65mph. If I stay below this speed it is imperceptible. I've had a whining front diff for some time now and was told that this would eventually result in vibration before the diff packs in altogether. So when I...

    Timing belt light reset

My warning light came on today at just over 120,000 miles. I had the timing belt changed at 106k so I was a bit concerned. The AA told me that the warning is linked to the odometer, rather than a sensor and that I don't need to worry. Still, I would good to have second opinion from one of the...

Autohome like roof tent from home2go

I just came across an interesting listing on ebay which led me to http://www.home2go.co They seem to have a range of roof tents which appear to be copies of the Autohome range - but a much cheaper. Has anybody come across these before? The company is based in Haslemere, Surrey which is...

    High pitched whine

Bump this old thread. Same problem here! I too have an 80 series with an auto box 80 like Rob above. I get a constant whining noise but only when I've got my foot on the gas. The noise is at its loudest between 50/60mph and seems to be coming from the front axle. To be honest I've had the...

    Broken Rear Half-Shaft

Thank you Jon Thanks everybody :-)
  34. Paul_Driver

    Broken Rear Half-Shaft

Well I got it sorted. In the end the diff didn't prove to be a problem and with a little wiggling, the half-shaft slid straight in. The acid test will be this weekend when I have to drive from Yorkshire to Fairford air show, a round trip of 400 miles. One last question. What is the recommended...

    Broken Rear Half-Shaft

Gosh, this has all become very controversial. I hope to get my replacement half-shaft tomorrow and whilst I agree that the situation does warrant further investigation, my first priority is the get the motor running again until such time as I can get into a garage to get it looked at properly...

    Broken Rear Half-Shaft

Yes Jon, I'm working on the drivers side and Stef is sending another half-shaft. Having taken a closer look, you are right about cone washers. Mine we still in place afterall. Roger, thanks for the advice but I must confess to not really understanding it.
  40. Paul_Driver

    Broken Rear Half-Shaft

He's sent me an import  Jon, I didn't lock the diff and to be honest it didn't even cross my mind - it doesn't work anyway! As I look down the axle with a torch, I can see that there is a pin across the tube, in the vicinity of the diff. Is this what is preventing me from getting the...
  41. Paul_Driver

    Broken Rear Half-Shaft

Well I've got a replacement half shaft from Stef, but it is slightly different from the broken one and doesn't seem to fit. They are the same length and I'm pretty sure it's from an 80, but there appear to be two differences. 1. The grooved area that fits into the diff is shorter; instead of...
  42. Paul_Driver

    Broken Rear Half-Shaft

Thanks, this is all great advice. I've ordered a half-shaft from Stef, so when it arrives I'll take the bearings out and have a good look over. The bearing that was fitted last year was genuine Toyota. No I didn't remove the shaft end before driving home. I'll post some close up pictures a...

    Broken Rear Half-Shaft

I was driving on the farm where I live, I did drive home but that only took 5 minutes. You've got me thinking though and upon reflection, I did have a wheel bearing failure (same wheel) over a year ago and I drove home on that occasion, so that is most likely what did it. The mechanic that did...

    Broken Rear Half-Shaft

Hi Jon, yes good question. I'm talking with the wheel on, right at the tread edge of the tyre. I'll double check the measurement tomorrow as I didn't use a ruler. Only to say that it was noticeable but pretty slight.
  45. Paul_Driver

    Broken Rear Half-Shaft

Interesting. I drained the diff and there was no debris or swarf of any kind although the oil was pretty black if that means anything
  46. Paul_Driver

    Broken Rear Half-Shaft

You know what, I wasn't doing a lot! I had just had to winch out of a fairly steep stream crossing, which was a surprise to me as I know damn well that the truck has done harder things at Lincomb Farm. When this happened I was on a bit of an incline, but nothing that it shouldn't have been...

And here's the other half. Julian suggested a strong telescopic magnet to remove it. Again lots of wear

    Broken Rear Half-Shaft

It's been a while, hello everyone. My rear half-shaft broke over the weekend and I thought I'd post a photo as it seems fairly exceptional to me. My thanks to Julian Voelcker of http://www.overland-cruisers.co.uk for talking me through the problem so far. The break is so clean you could...

    Flashing dash lights

Well the regular dash lights have stopped flashing but the turbo warning light has not. I've posted a video on youtube to illustrate, only to say that the turbo light flashes at idle and goes off when the engine is revved a little. As always, any help really appreciated. video...
