Help & Advice please re;- my HDJ80

Hi Roger You could always contact Julian at 'Overland Cruisers'. Great web site and what he does not know about Land Cruisers is not worth knowing. Excellent workshop, but usually very busy, which is always a good sign. I have recently sold my 80 series to somebody who wanted to drive from...

    Indicator light

Indicator light. Yes it is a sealed unit. Unlike the older 80 series were you could unscrew the lens from the holder. The only other way as I see it is to take out the bulb holder and use something on the end of a bendy thing to get into the corners Thanks for the info Danny

    Dip Beam

Cheers Towpack. The garage were quoted £145 so they fitted a 30amp relay it its place at a cost of £12.50.

    Dip Beam

Cheers joinerman/towpack. The vehicle was used 3 days ago at night no problem, so the last thing to check was the bulbs themselves, both duff. Hard to believe.

    Dip Beam

We all know that 80 series dip beam is not the best, but having had the failure to start problem sorted I now have no dip beam at all. Main beam only which has a tendency to wind other drivers up a bit. All other lights are fine. Where to look first? The starting fault was the starter relay...

This was the offending piece. The previous picture had a transmission error.

Some good pics. As I said below the problem was the starter relay. Mr T wants's £135 + vat. The fact that the RAC guy started it while lying underneath and bypassing the relay would suggest that the motor is OK in itself. Should that decide to retire as well is the Milner's one a sensible...

It is stupid question time. Is the starter relay and the glow plug relay the same thing, the description in the Haynes manual would suggest as much. It is just that the terminals have different designations. I was interested in Frank,s reply stating the 80 series does not have glow plugs. I...

Sighted relay felt it click when key was turned. So it looks as if the problem is between that relay and the starter motor.

Yes, that is the wire I was referring to. The weather was so foul I resorted to the RAC in the end. He looks after two other 80,s so I assume he is right, he started the engine it by supplying the power required from underneath the vehicle which means the starter is OK as well. I look forward...

The fault in the system appears to be that there is no power in the energiser wire aka the exciter wire. That could mean broken wire or a dodgy key barrel I suppose. John.

Thanks for that Chas. I emailed a picture of it to my local Toyota dealership and having passed it around they tell me it is the Glow Plug Relay part no 2861017080. Just looked at a glow plug relay on a website and it looks nothing like the item I sent a picture of. I would have thought it...

Thanks for all the replies regarding non starting. Thanks Towpack/Chris. Just ordered/asked my wife to listen while standing out in a force 9 to the noise when turning the key and it is one click, I was expecting the rat tat tat noise as well. The click definitely comes from the starter motor. John

Jumped in the vehicle today turn the key, nothing but a little click. Looking from the front the left hand battery reads 12.36 and the right one 12.24. My garage man via the phone says it should start. I have put some jump leads on from another vehicle still nothing. It worked perfectly well...

    Power check

Having been told that my 1995 GS model is underpowered by somebody who was less than convincing when when checking the vehicle for sale, is there a simple method of finding out whether it is the case or not. Turbo light

Thanks for that Frank. The "mechanic" has told the possible buyer that the turbo is possibly on the way out because he could not get the warning light to appear when revving the engine, sounds more and more like Mr Bean. The purchaser is now looking elsewhere. I had never seen the light come...

    Turbo light

When working for Toyota in the early 90's I seem to remember the turbo light would come on when accelerating in the early 12v version 80 series. Does the same apply to the 24 valve 1995 version. I have had one for 7 years and the light has never come on at all. I am told by a "mechanic" that...

    Batteries

In a 1993 Landcruiser 80 series, are the two batteries the same or is the passenger side different from the drivers side? There appears to be a difference of opinion. Toyota say they are the same other suppliers say they are different. What amperage should they be? JOhn Many Thanks

    Radius Arm Bushes

That should have read 550 at the front not 525mm, that would seem to suggest less that a two inch lift at the front

    Radius Arm Bushes

Thanks Jon, I rushed out and measured the height and the figures were 525 at the front and 580 at the back without the spare on. Does that mean I can get away with standard bushes although CC are currently fitted but falling apart. Regarding the unintentional joke that Chris spotted he should...

    Radius Arm Bushes

Thanks for that Chris, the only thing I am unsure of is how much lift was applied before I bought the vehicle which was 6 years ago, the seller who was a young girl, thought it was 2" but the local garage seems to think it is more, is there a way of telling reasonably accurately. The...

    Difflock Magnets

Thanks for your message, unfortunately, there does not appear to be any witness marks visible, even my wife with 20/20 vision cannot see any. How should the magnets be positioned when reglueing back in the difflock actuator, as they are all loose and need reseating. Many thanks. John

    Difflock actuator

Thankyou both for that. The brushes do have flying leads so one would assume that the springs do not have to be the original metal. The new brushes were too big and have been cut down to size. I could get the rear locker to work using a 9v battery but the front one is not playing for whatever...

    Difflock actuator

Having taken the front difflock to pieces and damaged the small springs that push the brushes against the rotating armature, are the springs made of a particular metal or can you use similar size springs from a biro which has been suggested. Do they have to be of a particular metal such as...
