Thanks to John for his input here. For info (it might help others) the diff went back together with new bearings (Toyo from roughtrax) and the original shims and came in smack on the lower limit for ring-gear backlash with pre-load in tolerance

Hi John, do you have the FSM pages for the diff rebuild? I've got the Max Ellery manual but have heard various errors in the 3rd party manuals......just want to make sure I have the right settings for preloads and backlash. Thanks .

Same problem with my old surf years back.....get the grinder out.....just make sure you cut the stubs short so you can wiggle the end bit out of the hole.....

If LPG is a thing in NZ, why not consider an LPG conversion? Granted you won't get more power / torque but it'll slash your fuel costs for a fraction of the cost and hassle of an engine change......

Why complete light units not just bulbs? I've just fitted LED bulbs to my '96 '80 and the difference is night and day (!). The only downsides are - they're not strictly legal (I'll pop the halogens back in for the MOT and take my chances with the rozzers), and the standard bulb-seals dont fit so...

Check the mounting bracket for the igniter unit (it's on the left hand inner wing). The unit gets its earth through the bracket - if the bracket corrodes through its not always obvious as the wiring tends to hold unit roughly in place but there's no earth = no spark. Happened to my '96 FZJ80...

Update on this..... Update #1 - need to operate my multi-meter correctly - I had the probe plugged into the wrong port......lord knows what I was measuring but it wasn't amps! DOH! Update #2 - have traced the discharge to 0.3 amp going down on of the original factory circuits but I can't trace...
