First drive of a 100...3sp+OD gearboxes

Interesting, though i was struck by how little soot was coming out of the 58k car's exhaust when I bent down to inspect underneath. Is this due to working EGR or injectors that are much less worn I wonder. Doodle, agree on prices. But am tempted to wait until manual is available. I tried one of...

First drive of a 100...3sp+OD gearboxes

I'm selling a 12v auto 80 series and have driven two 100's with the 4 spd box, one with 58k miles and one with 180k miles. The 80 is quite a but lighter and feels it - it's a bit slow over the first ten yds then it's off and up to 40-50 mph leaves most traffic away from the lights without going...

    Product of choice for rust?

Thank you Roger. I've asked a restorer of VW camper vans what they use and good ol' waxoyl was the answer. I think I will use combo of POR 15 for painted areas and waxoyl for less visible areas. The 80 is for sale at the moment, but will apply this to my old saloon and whatever truck replaces...

Can't loosen front hub flange. Please advise.

Just a note to say thank you fellas. Combination of tapping the flange, hitting the ends of the studs, tapping the cones themselves and a bit of pre-sprayed WD loosened everything nicely. Hubs now tight. Thanks again Anwar

    Product of choice for rust?

Hi Frank I found your observations v interesting. There was a recent letter to Octane about modern production standards and tolerances giving new cars an almost indefinite mechanical life. I didn't respond, but even discounting the crippling electrical issues, I think this is a very long way...

    Product of choice for rust?

I get the impressions the steel in the 80 is good quality overall, it seems fairly resistant to rust though time and salt are beginning to have effects underneath. Certainly better than W210 Merc and BMW E39... Is anything made of good steel like those 50's Astons and Landrovers? From reading...

    100 vs 120 Series

Thank you. It disturbs me that known basic tech like crank and timing chain can be an issue at the same time as so much new tech is being introduced. Stinks of cost cutting. Said engineer used to work for GKN and will vouchsafe that Toyota's quality requirements were beyond those of BMW or Merc.

    100 vs 120 Series

Yes, it must have been noisy. Timing chain issue leading to new crank. He's a very tenacious engineer so I think will chase hard. Car's a 2008 IIRC.

    100 vs 120 Series

520d mostly racked mileage under v sedate wife. When I was a lad an LSD was on the BMW options list, which to me suggests corporate approval, back then, for spirited driving. But I was in a BMW service dept today and they confirmed the complexity is taxing customer relations. It wasn't Munich...

    100 vs 120 Series

This is true, but had my pants pulled down financially by one of UK's most respected specialists - the numbers are out of all proportion to any reality. Said specialist is slowly losing private customers. But I think modern German cars are worse from everything I hear. At least the E34 is still...

    Product of choice for rust?

I was wondering what is the preferred rust coating product. The obvious comes from Hammerite, either as paint or wax, and there is a rust treatment called Metal Ready. But I'd like to know what the forum favours. Thanks, Anwar

    100 vs 120 Series

True, unlike Germans who I think overreach in their tech. Won't be buying a German car again for foreseeable. Thank you, v good to know. The hunt for nice facelift car is on!

    Polybushes

Based on experience with saloon car I would keep rubber bushes on fore-arm components to preserve bump absorption, and consider poly bushes on lateral components for location. In truck's case this means poly's on the panhard rod. I can't think of any geometry issues.

    100 vs 120 Series

Thanks John. I'm not averse to four-figure bills but E34 M5 has left me allergic to nasty surprises (and five-figure bills). One of the reasons for replacing the 80 is to aim for a couple or three years of routine bills only. Perhaps the extra complexity of the 100 makes this the wrong choice...

    100 vs 120 Series

Ha ha, sounds like my wife is just like yours. Tried a 120 LC4 and there was much more pitching and head toss than in the 100. I worry she'd just be sick all the time in a 120.... My new worry is VGRS, seems unnecessarily and scarily complicated and ruinous to fix. If it breaks are there any...

    100 vs 120 Series

So it's quite easy to delete AHC? I had heard the spheres fail and cost £500 each, similarly the rear height sensors. Is this scaremongering or a real issue? I drove a car with AHC and thought it was a superb system. The ride in 'comfort' was fabulous. Edit: have seen thread on Pleiades...

Thanks for tip re washers. Have seen reference to brass hammer. Will an ordinary one damage the flange? Thanks

Can't loosen front hub flange. Please advise.

Dear forum I'd like to service my front wheel bearings, but get stuck very early on.... I remove the 6 bolts holding the drive flange to the hub, but no amount of judicious tapping seems to dislodge cone washers or flange on either side. The axle was rebuilt at Overland cruisers only 10k miles...

    100 vs 120 Series

Live south Birmingham. Even the wife's low risk policy on a 12 year old Mondeo is £400. Not really interested in a Prius, my second car is a 3.8 litre M5. But it's worth asking the question, and the difference between 17 mpg and 23 mpg is more than 25%. So would consider a manual car, or 5...

    100 vs 120 Series

Thanks guys. Have been having second thoughts about trading the 80 this morning, but would like to put family in something a bit more modern/solid/comfortable and as my 80's only a 5 seater I'd quite like to have the extra perches. The 80 has a good solid chassis, but not sure the body matches...

    100 vs 120 Series

Dear all I know they are not direct competitors but I am considering replacing my 1991 80 Series. I would like the 100 but am put off by potential AHC issues and the fuel consumption. Could anyone tell me if it's easy to ditch AHC in the event of problems e.g. just bolting on 4 bilstein...

Residual noise from rebuilt front axle

South Birmingham. Thanks for letting me know. Taking it out looks doable I think, I'd need a pro to put it back in and shim the pinion, but time is v short. I understand ring and pinion can be obtained from US. I'll keep trying JV for the time being though, thanks again

Residual noise from rebuilt front axle

I'm fairly sure it's gear related, occurs at v specific speeds and tiny changes from throttle off-to-on invoke it. It could be something else eg transfer box, but I'm fairly sure it's still the diff. Have been trying Julian but I think he's very busy at the mo because I haven't heard anything...

Residual noise from rebuilt front axle

I'd be grateful for some advice please. Last September I had my front axle rebuilt, as part of a whole heap of work on the truck, including £462 + VAT on a rebuilt diff - documented as new inner and outer pinion bearings. The car was a massive improvement to drive with what had been significant...
