Just fitted a set of toyo at plus tyres

When I went from road tyres to General Grabber ATs, I lost about 10 - 15% fuel economy which I put down to the chunky tread. So I ramped up the pressure to between 37 and 39 psi after reading other posts on the subject and that clawed back that mpg loss. 4 years on with 60k miles on those GG...

No, it's a suspected leak which would be big bucks to repair so I'm going to put the windows down instead.

Would it need to be on a ramp or could I do this at home? Cheers

    Air con problem diagnosis

So, having had the system degassed approx 3 weeks ago which seemed to resolve everything, a problem has reoccurred. Whilst on the motorway last week I suddenly noticed mist coming out of the air vents in the centre console. Initially i was worried it was smoke but no it was defo just air. Next...

    Air con problem diagnosis

I know, I know, you're right. Except I tend to forget when it's cold and wet for 6 months! Lesson learned though.

Single clunk when reversing off drive way outside house

Any ideas what this could be? I have the steering towards full lock at the time and reversing down hill, barely using the accelerator. Have heard a loud clunk noise a few times (co-incidentally since my suspension was replaced, see other post, but don't think it can be connected...) It's...

    Air con problem diagnosis

Have had the system re-gassed and so far that seems to have worked. They leak tested and the vacuum was apparently good so fingers crossed. £75 at Toyota.

    Suspension nightmare

As a follow-up to the above post, I decided to order the full LC5 replacement suspension kit from Pedders UK which was approx £700. Chap from Pedders (Roger) very helpful. Took 2.5 weeks to arrive from Oz. Have now fitted the above (£300), having removed the original air bags and suspension...

    Suspension nightmare

Readers familiar with my previous post will know that my recent MOT diagnosed a need for new shock absorbers. I decided yesterday that I would replace all four shocks with standard shocks rather than buy the LC5 spec electronically adjustable shocks. I was in touch with a helpful chap at...

    Brake disk upgrade?

Gents My disks and pads will need to be replaced some time soon. I am wondering whether I should try an upgrade. I don't want to bother with the expense of new calipers but wonder if some decent drilled disks might assist. I do a lot of driving on country lanes and there are a few idiot...

    MOT - rear suspension

I think I'll "pull the trigger" and do all four then. Only other thing that might be needed is apparently front strut mounts if the old ones are defective (can I tell by lifting the bonnet??). Roger at Pedders has been very helpful, including the following from their Aussie tech team...

    MOT - rear suspension

Yes, as per our exchange of emails. Just the shocks required which, judging by the Pedders tech guys's advice, will be all four shocks rather than just the rears. Anyone else had experience of replacing just the rear shocks in an LC5 or do I need to replace all four? cheers

    MOT - rear suspension

Thanks Gary. The bloke at Pedders said in an email that the full kit "comes with all the parts you need including instructions on how to disable the electronics to ensure no check light is displayed" Maybe I can get those instructions from Pedders even with the 4 shocks. I don't want to end...

http://www.pedders.co.uk/air-suspension-conversion-kit-for-toyota-lc5--prado--landcruiser-120-series_p23373665.htm This seems to be the one. £636. Due to my lack of experience in this area I'm not sure if I need the full kit. It's just the shocks that are weeping slightly and the car is...

    MOT - rear suspension

Cheers Gary. Hopefully my local mechanic will be happy to fit them. He is a fan of main dealer parts which is well-intentioned but not what I need in this case.

    MOT - rear suspension

I don't need anything too special as I only do a bit of cross country work - fields, rutted tracks etc but that's it. Nothing too hardcore.

    MOT - rear suspension

Hi Gary I'm just pricing this kit up now. On Milners the front and rear shocks are £48 each so £192 for the 4. Are EFS the mutt's nuts?

    MOT - rear suspension

I didn't do enough research into the differences between LC3, LC4 and LC5 when I bought my 120. I just saw that it was the LC5 and thought "great, top of the range", not realising it has an Achilles heel in the air suspension - just like the Range Rover's notorious air suspension. I have had 4...

Cheers. I think this route could be more attractive in view of the cost saving and the age of the vehicle.

    Air con problem diagnosis

I'm sure I was getting cool air in the front and not in the back (even with the a/c light switch on and the rear dial on blue (cool) on the back of centre console)..........at that point I assumed they must be on different systems hence my earlier question re it having its own compressor!
  23. B

    MOT - rear suspension

I mean will the handling be better than it was before the problem arose and I was on standard LC5 air suspension? (It's always seemed pretty wallowy anyway which I put down to the height and weight of the vehicle).
  24. B

    MOT - rear suspension

Righto, I know the one. I never use that either! I presume the high - low function would stop working as well if I changed to conventional shocks. Would the handling characteristics change at all?
  25. B

    Air con problem diagnosis

I can't recall ever getting chilled air in the rear and wondered why (the blower works though). I have ignored it as the front fans are pretty strong and soon cool the rear with the air con on full blast.

    Air con problem diagnosis

Thanks. Will have a butcher's later on. BTW, is there a separate compressor running the rear air con?
  27. B

    MOT - rear suspension

Yeh, £400 is a lot better than £1100. Right enough, I never use the adjustable height and frankly I can't really see why I would need it. Would I have to change all 4 shocks in my situation, rather than just the two at the rear?

    MOT - rear suspension

Cheers Gary. I did have a look on Milners just now but couldn't see anything that fitted the description so have emailed them. My mechanic didn't use the words airbags or levellers (I'm a novice with suspension matters admittedly) so I need to ask him again. The MOT last year said the rear...

    Air con problem diagnosis

No, it leaked out in two days four years ago when I had a corroded pipe. If there is no leak but a problem with the magnetic clutch then I guess the symptoms would be the same as I have now i.e. no "clack" noise. So at the moment it could be either a leak or a clutch / compressor problem.

    MOT - rear suspension

MOT today - passed - but a couple of observations from the garage that the rear suspension needs replacing (allegedly circa £1100 for the parts as it's air suspension). They said "You would have noticed it wallowing in the corners". I said "It always wallows in the corners!". Also brake...

    Air con problem diagnosis

Thanks. My only concern with that is that when I had a leak last time, the re-gas worked initially until all the new gas leaked out a day or two later! So I would have handed over my cash to Kwik-crook by then and I wonder how easily I could get it back off them!
  35. B

    Air con problem diagnosis

My compressor isn't kicking in - I can normally hear the clack from the inside of the car (plus the revs change a little as it loads the engine) and can't at the moment. Saying that, if there is not enough gas in the system then I understand the compressor won't start so it could be a leak or a...

    Air con problem diagnosis

Tried the air con the other day, admittedly for the first time in months, and it's not working (I know, you're meant to turn it on occasionally just to keep the seals from drying out but I haven't). On listening carfeully, I can't hear the compressor kicking in which may mean a compressor...

    Fuel Economy

I get about 17mpg however I've got an LPG conversion which at 58p per litre locally so works out at about 34mpg / 35mpg. Lack of range is the only problem - approx 250 miles on a tank so you need to plan ahead on long trips - or run on petrol (yikes!).

Not strictly a servicing question but this is the closest possible category. I am going to buy a pressure washer for blasting off mud this winter. Anyone got a recommendation? Cheers

Where to get key and remote fob copied

I only have one key with the remote fob attached and need to get a spare. I have just tried a local firm here but the guy says the car is too old (2004 - not that old is it!) and said I should go to Toyota. I am thinking they will be expensive so wondered what other members have done. Cheers

    Headlight deflectors for France

That's what I tried last week, greasemonkey, and it seemed to work well - albeit it doesn't give much range. I have an unsed set of the proper deflectors in the glove compartment just in case Plod gets shirty. I have been pulled a couple of times over the years for other misdemeanours! Cheers

    Headlight deflectors for France

Heading off this weekend for a couple of weeks in the wagon. Last time I went to France in the LC, I noticed what a piddling impact the standard headlight deflectors have on the lights which I think is because the headlights are massive! Are LC owners meant to use something bigger or do we...
