Literally all that I sent in the previous message were the words
"Just Testing
Pete"
On an otherwise blank page.
I deleted all of the replied-to message and the anti-virus confirmations. I
set Outlook to Plain Text.
So how come all the other junk got sent as well?

In your AVG antivirus program there is a section in the email scanner where
you can configure if it certifies email or not. If you untick the certify
mail option in the outgoing section it will stop the "other junk"

Hi Peter,
The anti-virus stuff is added at your end by your antivirus software -
there should be a setting to disable it, unless it is is compulsory
with the free version.
There is a strap line added by the mailing list software, which I keep
in so that people know where the message is from

Julian,
Just out of interest what proportion of subscribers have the digest as
opposed to real time?
Also on the subject of subjects - it all works unless people reply with a
new subject (don't know why but it happens) or amend the old one - if either
of those happens I struggle to thread things with Outlook (more than
normal).

Hi Malcolm,
At last count there were about 300 people on the list with around 2/3rds of
them on Digest mode - so basically the majority!
True, thread hijacking is a pain in the neck and people don't realise that
their messages are less likely to be read if they do it.
Funnily enough I have also written something on that as well. See:
http://www.landcruisers.info/lists/list_threading.html.
P.S. Have you considered stopping your anti virus software from adding it's
blurb to your emails?
