Yes, I could be interested in that.

Hi Gary,

I went a couple of years ago - it is well worth a visit, especially if overlanding is your thing, and even more so if you'll enjoy lusting over Unicats, Actionmobils and the likes. Unfortunately, like most of the things on sale there, these aren't exactly cheap...

The show is on an ex-military site and can only be reached by shuttle bus, whilst the camping 'facilities' were on a retail/industrial estate nearer the town - it's well worth a walk through the campsite even if you aren't camping.

HTH, have fun if you do go - doubt I'll make it this year

I went last year and absolutely loved it, to the point that both Steph and I agreed that we would come again this year, before the show had even finished!

As Toby said, it's an Overlanding show so if that's what your after then it'll be right up your street. The stuff isn't cheap, but if you do some research before you go, you can pick up some bits of kit that cost an extra premium in the UK, or aren't on the UK market.

It's a good place to see all the different solutions to the same question, what's the best way to travel overland?

The most impressive bit was admiring all the craftsmanship and design that had gone into all their custom campers, especially the Toyota based versions, very very impressive! They have some very well thought out and proven designs.

The show is very well organised, and the shuttle bus to and from the show was typically german in it's regularity! If memory serves me correctly it was €18 for a four day show pass, can't remember what the camping cost, but it wasn't much. The only catch with the camping is finding some spare scrap of land the hasn't been claimed yet, you know what the Germans are like with the deck chairs and their towels, well on the camping ground they rope off areas for their mates, which means you have to sort of muscle your way in a little and pitch a lot closer to the people around you than you normally would.

I went off to the show on the first day, having arrived the night before, to return at lunch time to find us blocked in on all sides by another three new arrivals! In my experience it just seems to be they way it works at this show, as it's so popular. The atmosphere is great and everyones is very friendly, and will move to let you out if nessecary.

As Toby mentioned, having an evening stroll around the camp ground is just as interesting as the show it's self, there really are all types of excellent vehicles there, and interesting owners to chat too. I even had people coming and checking us and the vehicle out, as being from the UK, we were unusual and the definatley the minority group. A think I saw around ten UK vehicles, including Andy's, in a sea of a couple of 1000 vehicles from all over the world. I say that because an Australian registered 110 parked up by us one night!

It's a show that's well worth the effort, and I will be back again this year!

Cheers,

Scott.

Scott, do you recommend staying the whole four days. Where thinking of going as part of a longer trip and have family in Frankfurt on the way. Not sure if it warrants four days of if all the action is on the first two days etc. How far is the camping from the show and is the parking the same as camping or are they two different areas [thinking of roof top tent]

Hi Simon, I'd say 2-3 days are required to see everything at the show. I was there for the first three days, and still on the third day found stuff we hadn't seen before.

I set off from London early on the Wednesday, the day before the show, and arrived at the camp ground 13.5hrs later, got held up in traffic for a bit around Frankfurt. We left early ish on the Sunday and made the return trip in 11.5hrs.

As far as I know there isn't action as such on specific days, everyday seemed the same, well may be slightly quieter on the Thursday, so it was easier to get about.

The camp grounds are based on grass land surrounding the industrial park of Bad Kissingen, and the day parking is in a car park at the top of the hill that the industrial park is situated on. I didn't see the day visitor car parking as it was out of sight, but the bus dropped us near there a couple of times and I saw the people heading that way to collect their cars.

You can't access the show groud by car or foot as far as I'm aware. They have a road block leading to the show ground and only vehicles with passes will get through. I would guess that the show ground was around 3-4 miles from the camp ground, but its very hilly terrain. The show ground is in the middle of a forest and very well organised.

The buses, well coaches really, run very regularly and if you by something large the organisers will ferry it back to your vehicle in troopie.

The weather was quite hot when we were out there, so we went to the show in the morning and afternoon, but returned to the vehicle for a sit and rest at lunchtime. In the evening you stroll round the camp ground and socialise.

The show is well worth visiting, especially if you can incorporate it into a mini break.

Cheers.
