Black smoke on gear change

Ive had my 79 for 4 years, it's got a remap, not an aggressive tune. Never had any problems since we have been traveling Australia all that time and really using the car. Recently (last 6 months) we have stopped traveling and are in a remote town where a normal drive involves a few km at best. Im guessing the black smoke I'm seeing on gear change is due to the type of driving that the car is now doing. Would this seem plausible? What would be the way to deal with this?

The town Im living in is remote but he there is plenty of people here and good turn over of fuel so doubt the fuel quality is an issue.

Have you been able to take it on a longer drive to see if it clears things up? Try to narrow down if it's related to the short journeys?
