On the 21st October 1805 Admiral Lord Nelson defeated a combined French and Spanish fleet off Cape Trafalgar. During the battle he is shot and later dies of his wounds.

Many years later a group of people were being shown around HMS Victory and when they reached a point where a brass plaque was screwed to the deck the guide said "Ladies and Gentlemen this is where Nelson fell" and a voice from the back saod "I'm not surprised, I nearly tripped over it myself" :laughing-rolling:

It was on this day in 1984 that Nikki Lauda won the F1 drivers championship by 1/2 a point..

Joining in with the congratulations! A very special time for any family:icon-biggrin:

On the darker side, I remember being very affected by the Aberfan disaster. I was 13 years old at the time and I remember coming home from school to see on TV (black and white of course) the carnage and sadness of the event with real-time interviews with parents who's hands were bleeding from digging in the slag to try to find their kids. A very emotional time, both my parents were tearful even though we lived in Brum, we had a close affinity with Wales.

What annoyed me intensely and still does, was the coal board's complacency about its liabilities. Not our problem... Was their stance. For God's sake, if it's not theirs, whose was it? The villagers had to fund the removal of the remaining tips themselves, to ensure that there was no recurrence of the disaster. Disgusting state of affairs.

There's many websites dedicated to the disaster. Anyone interested should have a browse. Be prepared for an emotional ride, it was a terrible and desperate event. 116 children between the ages of 6 and 10 perished along with some 20 odd adults, teachers and other innocents.

Congratulations to the Symmonds family and its newest member! :icon-biggrin:

Well done Tony and Becky, congratulations indeed. So bonus punches at next Lincomb will be finding where you've left various baby paraphernalia.
