Engine no gone ?

I've just purchased a 100 series diesel turbo with Victoria number plates I have looked and clean the engine block trying to find the engine number all I can find is HD1 located above the starter I'm wondering if it been a replacement engine installed ? Anyone come across this before I in the process of getting some engine detail repair and dreading heading to NSW transport with a big ? incompleted documentations
