Hello gentlemen

I have a 1978 FJ40 which I have owned since new. I live in Cluj-Napoca, Romania and I'm at the moment in London looking for spare parts (which I can't find in Romania). I need an oil cooler, bushes for the leaf springs and some other parts. Can anyone direct me to a supplier anywhere in the UK?

My FJ40's website is www.vimeo.com/FJ40.

thanks

Hi Bob,

Milner's Off Road is a good place to start - 0044 (0)1629 734411. Other wise, if you are in the Uk at the moment, try a Toyota dealer, and if they aren't too helpful try another as some are good and others aren't interested. The one near me, in Stoke, is excellent. You will need to have your VIN number with you - Mr T's system is based on VIN numbers.

Alternatively there are a number of specialists in 40 series in France - try ebay.fr and more and more people are using the Oz parts suppliers.

Hope that is some help.

Regards,

Dear Rodger, many thanks for that suggestion. I have sent an e-mail to Milner - I see they're in scenic Matlock (good excuse for a trip to Derbyshire).

I have also made contact with Karl Webster of landcruiserparts.co.uk and he is looking around on my behalf.

I don't have much hope of luck with Toyota dealers in the UK. I was until 2009 in Dubai where FJ40 parts used to be quite freely available (there's a lot of demand from Yemen which is one of the last refuges of the FJ40) ... but now the Toyota dealers in Dubai and even Oman don't stock FJ40 parts (or if they do, there's one piece left in stock which they are keeping for a favourite customer). I was looking for a brake booster and finally found one on a wrecked FJ40 in an obscure village called Al Dhaid - I got it for a reasonable price and miraculously it worked.

with best regards
Bob

Wow, cluj-napoca! Just drove through there on the big trip

Hi Bob,

If you decide to make the trip to Matlock best let Karl, Jonnie and myself know, I think the current count is 6 40s between us and we're just south of Matlock.

My local Mr T checks for the location of the parts and if they're in the UK gets them overnight but if they are further afield, it takes longer. From they're system he can tell if Mr T's emporium in Japan has them or not. Very helpful chap.

Good luck in your search and if you need any help, just let us know

Regards,

Dear Rodger

Many thanks. I'm waiting for replies from Karl and Milner's (maybe I'll know by Monday). I take it that Karl is also in the Matlock area? (His website doesn't say where he is.) If they have some of the parts that I need, then I'll certainly come up to Matlock. There seem to be several trains from St Pancras to Matlock daily, so I could probably be there by Monday mid-day.

I'm hoping that Karl or Milner's will be able to diagnose my photographs of the engine and chassis. Only a few days ago, after searching for months for someone able to work on an FJ40, I was lucky to meet a mechanic in Cluj-Napoca, Alin Dan, who was the first person who understood what an FJ40 was. I had to leave for Abu Dhabi for a few days and in my absence Alin took the photographs and e-mailed them to me. So in some cases I don't know exactly what part I need.

I think my FJ40 is the only one in Romania. The story of how it escaped from the Middle East and reached Europe is a saga in itself (the story is partly told on my website www.vimeo.com/FJ40). I know there is an FJ40 and a BJ40 in Ruse in Bulgaria, because while driving through Ruse last year, on the way to Cluj-Napoca, by chance I met the owner, Blago ([email protected]).

with best regards

BTW Monday is a bank holiday so Milner's will not be able to help you ;)

In the video Day 4 - coming down the mountain on the website - is that front right tyre completely bald?

Yes, the front tyre is bald. Don't know why that one and not the others. Gotta change it ...

Good day gentlemen

Bob Edwards signing in again from sunny Finchley Road. In my search for FJ40 parts in the UK, I've drawn a complete blank so far. (Although, thanks to Steve and Rodger for their leads; Milner Off Road don't have any FJ40 parts, Jemca Toyota in London would have to order from Japan; and all the other sources are in the USA, where eventually I may have to mail-order. Spectre Off Road, TLC, fjparts.com and Man-A-Fre between them have all the parts that I need.)

Just so that I don't go back to Transilvania empty-handed, may I appeal to your collective knowledge as to whether, anywhere in the UK, I can find aftermarket, used or salvaged of any of the following:

an oil cooler (Toyota part number T15710-61010)
a set of polyurethane body mounts (usually 12 or 15 pieces in the set)
a set of polyurethane bushes for the leaf springs (24 pieces for all the springs)
a front engine mount, the squarish variety (Toyota part number T12361-60022) (2 pieces).

I don't mind getting on a train to go and collect a part. I'll be in the UK till probably Saturday 7 May 2011.

with thanks and best regards

Hi bob, I would recommend a buy from euro4x4 website. There website seems to have most items, shipping can be expensive on small items but they seem to have a set delivery price (to the uk) so the more you buy the better the delivery price.

Atleast they are in Europe so a lot closer than the good old USA.
Jonnie

Dear Jonnie

Many thanks, I went to www.euro4x4parts.com and indeed they have aftermarket bushes, body mounts and engine mounts. Now the only piece to be tracked down (in Europe) is the oil cooler. I sent them a message through their website and await their reply.

all the best
Bob

Yes, it's a petrol engine. I have to admit that I did not know what an oil cooler was until my mechanic said that it was damaged. On the Toyota parts diagram there is indeed an oil cooler for the FJ40 with 2F engine; it's part number T15710-61010; it appears on the Man-A-Fre website as 15710 COOLER (http://www.man-a-fre.com/explodedview/o ... esfj60.htm). I still don't know what the function of this specific part is.

I'll see if I can upload an image of the damaged part to my flickr site.

Bob

You can get a lot of parts on French ebay. To widen the search to the whole of Europe click the appropriate button.

Thanks Jon and others who posted; finally I found an oil cooler on eBay, in the USA. It should be on its way to Romania as I write.
