My Troop Carrier has a 1HZ engine with a after market low pressure turbo, and know one has a good word for that conversion

I have in my yard a 80 with a 1-HDT engine and a autobox, so my thinking is rebuild the 80 engine, I'm more than capable off doing this myself and putting it in the Troopy
So my question is how hard is this conversion likely to be
David

If you read up on the SA site Adolf hustler has done it to his. Seems like a bolt in and out conversion.

To be fair Dave would you need to rebuild the 80 lump? I suppose whilst it was out it would make sense but needed??

Another point. Would the 80 not be worth keeping together? It didn't look bad on photos I've seen.

Karl That white 80 is ruined it's got a bloody flat wheel

Lol. Ill come and pump it up for you ;)

you would be better asking someone for a price for a nice engine :icon-wink:

My dad runs a 70 with the 1HZ, we have fitted a turbo kit from All American, it goes well to be fair, for me when I one day get a 76 I will have to have the 1HD-T put in it with a few upgrades

From what I have read particularly on the LCCSA site.... There are 2 schools of thought. Yes there are those that say don't install a turbo. But there is also those who have installed a turbo and by monitoring it with a decent exhaust gas temperature monitor as well as maintaining it.... They have been pretty successful in that the engine has not prematurely failed.

Having read the original write up on that cruiser build.... I would expect SAC to ensure that the installation was top notch otherwise fall flat on their reviews with Andrew. Might be worth checking as I don't think Steves a Auto clinic (sac) makes turbos... Just installs them. Plus I think it's only a low pressure turbo.

I have also seen quiet a few Australian 1HZ turbo cruisers advertised for sale with 250k miles.

Food for thought....

If the 1HZ is running well with no known issues, I would leave well alone. It maybe worth getting the AFR checked, and continue to monitor the EGT. I know of some 1HZ pickups that have had turbos from new in Aus that now have over 350,000 km on the clock, and they are still going well. From what I understand, providing you don’t try to get too much power the 1HZ with turbo it should still be a reliable engine.
