Hello,

Does anyone know where I could find a detailed list of what countries sold/sell the 70 series, and which trim options they had? Wikipedia shows a lot of the possibilities, but doesn't detail what was available which year and in which country.

I ask becasue I'm trying to narrow down my search for a 70 series overseas to import, and I wanna' make sure I'm barking up the right tree.

Thanks!

Good luck with that!!! I reckon the only people that will know that are Toyota Japan!!

Have you got a copy of the book The Land Cruiser Legend? It lists all the variations in body style, chassis, engine, etc. There are over 100 different combinations before you even look at trim levels. Better to narrow it down to what model you actually want and then start searching. There are a couple of importers that specialise in Land Cruisers in the States that might help or even have one in stock.

I've seen that book on Amazon, wasn't sure if it were any good or not. Sounds like I need to order it!

As Snowbound says plus there are/have been 14 different countries with J7 production facilities.

You do need that book!

Rodger

2 basic Starting Points:

A) Petrol (Gas)
B) Diesel

1) Short Wheelbase wagon
2) Medium Wheelbase wagon
3) Long Wheelbase wagon (Troopy)
4) LWB Wagon (5 door)
5) Cab chassis/Pick Up

Also, 1, 2 and 4 were available with coils (Prado/Bundera/Land Cruiser 2 depending on market) or leaf springs. The coils also came with engines under 3 litres, so that shapes the choices there a bit as well.

From that list, start to work out what you want....

It is the Land Cruiser bible!!

Also you can watch this set of 3 films on YouTube by the author, just switch on subtitles if you don't speak German.

Think you got the Land cruiser museum over there and Jay Leno done a spot on his garage show about a cruiser nut who only bought low mileage models and restored them got to be worth some looking at

I was looking for an original SWB FJ40 Land Cruiser here in the USA when I "discovered" the 70 series. I wanted an older model to qualify for antique status and in addition was looking for a little more comfort. Living in the desert SW air would be a welcome addition. A lot of 70s were produced and sold in jurisdictions that used RHD. The importers I'd run into on the web were bringing them in from Japan. About that time I discovered an ad on Ebay for one that was LHD. It didn't sell on the auction so I contacted the seller and made an offer which was accepted. The gentlemen I bought if from are a father and son. The father was a land developer in Venezuela. Hugo Chavez confiscated his entire business and forced him to leave the country. His son, an engineer, is still in Caracas. My '94 Machito, as they are called in Venezuela, was everything it had been represented to be. They wanted to be certain that it would be a reliable vehicle and had Toyota in Caracas put in a new clutch and carburator, and completely serviced it before shipping it to the US. And before I picked it up they had another service done by Toyota here in the US. I've communicated with Carlos several times since buying the Machito and he's told me he plans to try and find another one or two to import into the USA. If you're interested I'll be happy to give you both his and his father's contact information. I know this is a little off the topic but hope it may be helpful.

Thank you! I'm actually working with a person in Venezuela at the moment who is looking for a Machito for me, but I would also appreciate the contact. The thing that I am finding difficult is that most all of them are gasoline, it seems like there weren't many diesel machitos.

What part of the US are you in? I'm in SoCal, but am an AZ resident and as such would register my truck in AZ.

Hi Winegrower,
Nice to know you got your ‘Machito’ are you happy with it?
How difficult it was to get it out of Venezuela with the current political situation there?
I am trying to get myself one but I am in Scotland so I am looking for RHD from japan. The difference is that they are much more expensive than in Venezuela but they are diesel.
In Venezuela you can find them already fully customize for a song.

Hi Sabilco13,
Yes, I'm happy with the Machito. It's a solid vehicle in every aspect. I was fortunate to get one that had not been altered, had low mileage (160K) and was in such good condition it didn't look like it had ever been off road.
Importation to the USA had been handled by the sellers before I got it so it was already titled in Texas. As it was old enough (>25yrs) it could be licensed as an antique and avoid the emission requirements.

The following is a list of websites I got off a Google search here in the USA that advertise that they import FJ 70s . I can't vouch for any of them:

Used Toyota Land Cruiser 70 For Sale (with Prices and Photos) - [Leaving Land Cruiser Club]
2019 Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series For Sale, Specs - Toyota Cars & Truck - [Leaving Land Cruiser Club]
Land Cruisers Direct - Home - [Leaving Land Cruiser Club]

The last one, landcruisersdirect, is a small business located in Linden, Utah. Their site is definitely more personal.

I'm fortunate that I've not needed to replace any parts on the Machito. I do have concerns in that area. Fortunately there are alot of FJ80 parts that are interchangeable and a couple of good Japanese parts houses that will ship to the USA. Are you aware of any European or Middle East part sources for future reference?

Hi Winegrower,
Thank you very much for your links. However, I’m in Scotland I can’t use them. I think I have some links of places in Europe that sell parts for the machito but I will send them tomorrow when I get in front of my desktop. Can I ask you what year is your Machito and if you don’t mind me asking how much do you pay for the machito in USA after all the expenses? It is just to have an idea of the differences of prices between US and UK thank you.
Thank you

Mine is a '94. I'd prefer not to talk about pricing. It really won't have much bearing on any transaction you engage in. I will say that while I was back in Oklahoma in October a fellow stopped me and said he wouldn't be surprised if I decided to sell it in California it might fetch $60K US. But that may be a stretch. Since it is in such good condition and is pretty rare here it may be more valuable than in countries where it's commonly available. You will be able to see what the asking prices are on the websites. I did have a fellow recently offer to trade me a Land Rover for it. I turned him down.
From what I've read here on the forum you need to be very careful about corrosion. They can look pretty and be a moth eaten disaster under the paint. Toyota was not known to agressively rustproof their vehicles back then.
