My 100 "chasing"

I have a LC 100 - 99 model - with 450 000 km on it. It has been running well, but the last trips I have been noticing it "chasing" with speed varying slightly up and down. During the cycle lasting a few seconds there is also a burst of black smoke coming from the exhaust. Anyone with a tip where to start troubleshooting?

Water in fuel , blocked egr , clogged up air or fuel filter ?

Hi Bjorn - had exactly these symptoms with my 2001 LC100. Did the usual simple things with filters, fuel etc but no improvement. Got hold of the Techstream s/w (btw - really inexpensive and useful) but no DTC's showed. I discovered that there are several possible causes and I settled on possibly the EGR full of crud (it is active right from pick-up, and influences the fuelling). If the ECU spontaneously decides too little fuel then it momentarily can increase flow - slight surge to puff of black smoke at speed, being my symptoms. I wanted to avoid dismantling the induction side of things on my drive :flushed: if I could (not touched for over 250k miles!) so had a search for an effective fuel additive to see if this would clean things sufficiently. Normal car shop additives did nothing but then I found 'Archoil AR6400-D MAX Engine, Turbo, DPF & CAT Cleaner'. Given the spec it seemed it could cure things so put some in, went to Wales and back in April (600 miles) and problem looks as though solved. The additive possibly has cleaned things sufficiently to get over the problem so I will use this periodically to continue the cleaning process, hopefully! Good luck!

Hi Bjorn, I am a new member here, after 25 years I am about to own a cruiser again so I joined this forum. I would agree with Shayne especially about the water contamination. The product "Bigone" is describing (Archoil AR6400-D MAX Engine, Turbo, DPF & CAT Cleaner') has a water desperant in it. Any water that makes it's way to the fuel lift pump will come into contact with a fine nylon or wire mesh. This mesh is probably fine enough to stop water once it has become oily with fuel. If water was present using this above product would have caused the water to disperse and thereby unblock the mesh and therefore allow proper fuel flow the High pressure pump. It is a good idea to add a fuel treatment on a regular basis but I would caution you to not use it with every fill up unless you think you are using dodgy fuel. Drum fuel is a shocker for water as they are rarely store correctly. Most modern premium diesel fuels already have additives mixed in.

Thanks for good responses.

I have done some research on the bio-diesel in normal autodiesel in Norway.

The mixture does not fit my driving habits of only driving 1-2000 km every summer and leave the LC 100 by itself for many months. I filled full tank in October and started to use the car in June when I discovered the problems. It seems like this diesel should only be stored 2-6 months (depending on who I ask).

My theory is that the old diesel from last October has caused my problems.

I will check for additives like "Archoil AR6400-D MAX Engine, Turbo, DPF & CAT Cleaner' and have also been recommended "Fuel Guard" from Kent and Tunap 989 and then Tunap 984.

If this old biodiesel mixture that is causing my problems, should I do more than just use the additives (replaced dieselfilter 1500 km last August)?

In addition to good advice above her: Make sure to use original fuel filter and oil filter. There are many fuel filters which are supposedly compatible, but actually give too little flow.

Kanskje du er angrepet av dieseldyret? (Gelling fuel)

I did not change fuel filter on Toyota so I will check what they put in.

I hope not dieseldyret (Gelling fuel) got me - as it is a major operation to get rid of - I only filled on highway gas stations,
