So what do you guys think of Ultra Zoom cameras? Are they limited in
use to just one type of photography? Can be used in with different
lenses? Does electronic lens stabilizer work?

Hi Jeremy,
Sorry Jeremy, I was really just having a little dig. I'm happy with the
photos as they are - ok some don't come out that well, but that more often has
to do with bad lighting and relying too much on the auto focus point and shoot
facilities.
The only time I ever tweak photos is with Picasa (the BEST program for
managing your digital images) and that is mainly trying to remove red eye or
improve a badly focused photo (my wife doesn't understand how the autofocus
works).
Having said that I am lucky, my brother in law used to be semi professional
photographer and is completely anal about these things and he is the one who
recommended the camera - he had bought one after extensive research.

I'm probably not the right person to answer as the jury is till out for me
re all digital cameras although I must admit I'm on the verge of buying a
Nikon D200. The reasons are complicated but partly because I have recently
found a 500mm Nikon reflex lens (=A3245, absolute bargain) which would be
about a 750mm lens on the D200 and would allow me to do different things on
future trips...Also the D200 is best compromise between pro capabilities and
reasonable price.
As for Ultra Zooms, the extra zoom is probably done digitally and so the
image will degenerate. Most digital cameras with these ultra zooms do not
have interchangeable lenses and the lenses they do have are extremely small
and are not very well made. I earn some of my money from taking pictures so
have a tendency to steer clear of the digital compacts. You have very little
control over the camera and whilst it is all pretty acceptable for everyday
stuff, it all gets too frustrating for me. As with processing, you pays yer
money...
Sorry Julian, thought you knew this was now a photo forum...
