Hi folks,
Another conundrum for those in the know. My 80 was a jap import years ago. The speedo has been intermittent for some time and stopped working. Reckoned it was the conversion gear for the kmh to mph so I ordered another. Bingo it worked, for 5 minutes but not the cruise control module. Jiggled it about a bit and it worked again, for 5 minutes. So I removed it completely and connected the cable directly to the cruise control module. I now have a working speedo, but the cruise still doesn’t work. It switches on as the light on the dash comes on but nothing else. It is of course a non available part as the 80 is a 1991 and has a cable operated Speedo. Thank you in advance.

No experience of the cable driven speedo cruise control setup unfortunately.

Well I can’t get the cruise control sensor from Yoshi, amayama or partsouk. Tried Garry the 80 breaker, he doesn’t have one either. I’m not great at electrics but wondering if it is reparable? Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

RM184E which is the first 80 series FSM from 1990 covers cruise control in the Body Electrical section (BE103). It tells you how to get a fault code from the CC ECU. It's not clear if it's talking about cable drive speedo's or not though. There's talk of a speed sensor and in the picture of where the parts are located, it could be a speed sensor on the gearbox rather than the speedo output on the rear of the transfer box. There are separate speed sensors on the gearbox that the gearbox ECU uses to decide what to do. So that chapter might apply to your setup. Worth a look?

Does the speedo drive cable connect to the cruise control ECU on yours with some kind of speed sensor in it? How does the gauge in the instrument cluster get driven then? Is there a drive cable from the cruise control ECU to the dash speedo? I've never seen one so I'm trying to piece together how it works from your description. Some pictures might help.

Thank you Jon for your help. I’ve looked up the manual that I have, Ellery, but I can’t find an ecu on mine. I’m going to check to see if it’s getting power to the sensor and go up from there and try and follow the wires. Thanks again.

It is the small square box to the righthand side of the circle.
I’ve been under the dash earlier today for a quick look and there are actually more ecu boxes than I thought for an early 80. Maybe one of them has developed a mysterious fault, or not. I disconnected the main battery just on the off chance that it might ‘zero’ itself back to what it should do. Unlikely I know but worth a chance.

That looks like a simple rotational speed sensor which provides an electrical signal for the ECU which is probably inside the vehicle somewhere, possibly behind one of the footwell kick panels

As you know, the speedometer on later models is electrical as opposed to cable driven but I should imagine the CC setup is very similar if not the same.
