This was a ford prefect and the wipers were driven off vacuum from the inlet manifold. They therefore only worked when you deaccelerated..........an extra safety feature in the rain :icon-biggrin:.

My Dad's Mk II Ford Consul also had vacuum wipers. They would shudder to a halt when overtaking something in the rain - then flap like mad things on the over-run, I think he once lost a wiper arm :icon-rolleyes:.

Less traffic about in those days, fortunately.

That's the beach Clive!!! Yes it was a side valve. At the age of 13 or so I explained it all to my uncle!! He lived in the middle of Cheltenham not far from me and when I left my house I could hear the ford running. He used to open his gates, reverse the car out right across the road and leave the engine running whilst he closed the gates. NO traffic in those days. I remember overtaking a Mighty Antar with a tank on the back. It took about 300 yards.
