Anyone down south used Poole diesel? I visited him and he was a bit of a d*ck but I’m willing to ignore that if his work is good. Mixed reviews from the few that I can find online, some say mark and avoid others say he does decent work.

Any first hand experiences with Poole diesel or suggestions for alternative diesel mechanics in Dorset would be great.
 
I’ve not used Poole Diesel. What is it you need doing?
 
I’m chasing a persistent low power and white smoke issue. One garage said it was head gasket, two others have said it’s not. I want to get the injectors serviced and a compression test to start with and go from there. Foot through the floor I’m at 40mph going uphill, not ideal.

They've done 1HDT injectors for me in the past.... they have a small workshop and you would need to book in advance....
While they are doing the vehicle reccomend a trip along the coast away from Brighton to Shoreham Airport and it's great cafe in the art deco terminal building
 
I used Automarine many years ago for my 80 pump refurbish. No problems with the pump, but they failed to set up the throttle position sensor on the pump, despite me leaving the workshop manual, so the gearchanges were all janky. I also left them a new cambelt and tensioner to fit while they had it off. That was stilll on the back seat when I collected it. Makes you wonder, who fits an old cambelt, especially when there is a new one provided, what else was reused instead of being replaced in the pump.

You just want someone you can trust to troubleshoot it properly. There isn’t anyone I could recommend in the South. I have a good local mechanic who is also a friend. I trust him to work on my 80 but I’d probably want a diesel specialist for this.

I had white smoke and loss of power come on suddenly in my last 80 whilst driving on the motorway. I turned out it was the pump and required rebuilding. I used the garage below and don’t have anything bad to say. They diagnosed and fixed the issue. They sent the pump off to be rebuilt. This was 12 or more years ago though.

I sent my pump & injectors off to diesel bob (Sheffield way?) and highly reccomend

Fuel filters and pick up filter been checked?
T in to boost line and check boost pressure.
Compensator diaphragm checked?
Compression check, if OK injectors out and serviced.

We are a bit thin on the ground down here. I’ve moved from Devon where I was spoilt for choice with decent 4x4 garages, I’m now spending an irrational amount of time on google maps hunting down smaller garages. I’m booked in for some work with LAR in June, I don’t particularly want to wait that long to resolve this but I may have to.

The issue has been fairly consistent, I’m slowly replacing parts and everything is original from what I can tell so it may well be pump at this age.

It can't be much wrong with it.
‘92, 197k. Starts fine, idle revs are too low but any attempt to adjust sends it to either 600 or 1100rpm, no middle ground. Fuel filters just done and no to having checked the rest you’ve suggested.

I’ve asked for a compression test on two separate occasions at separate garages and had no luck, I think most conventional garages just don’t want to do them. Others I’ve asked won’t do anything older than 2000. So next step is DIY it.
