I think the safest option over long distance is to drop the props, from what I've read the auto box circulates oil only when in a gear (R, D, 123), not in neutral which is why the box will get hot when coasting in neutral.

If the transfer box is in neutral the main box, manual or auto, is effectively uncoupled from the rest of the drive train so will not be turning, surely?

The wheels will turn the props and the props will turn SOME fo the transfer box gears, as I said. Not all, but the VC will be operating to a degree and many of the large internal gears. Only the input side to the T box will be disconnected. Now does that matter? I have no idea as I said before. But will some of the T box be turning? Yes. I can't see that getting hot and being a problem to be honest. The problem that you are trying to avoid is turning stuff in the AT. I would have hoped that N on the T box would have removed that potential.
