Seeing as this is a LC related forum I thought I would post this here as I stand a good chance of getting an unbiased opinion. I recently bought a fun 1999 Volvo V70R 2.4 AWD Auto and it has been quite a bit of trouble, mainly gearbox issues. Although the gearbox issues seem to have been sorted I need to replace the engine due to a low compression issue (easier and only £100 more to replace the entire engine and current engine likely to have a cracked head which are almost impossible to find used or new). This is a great car to drive (0-60 in about 7s) but I am loosing faith in it as I am fitting a used engine with no evidence of history. The cars AWD system had a major overhaul with all the components replaced at a cost of £4000 by previous owner so one can assume the AWD system on this car will be reliable for the next 100k miles. One thing to note is I only get 22mpg which stings but I have just learnt to accept it. So my question is, do I do a proper job and spend the extra £300-£400 and replace the cambelt, angle gear sleeve (crucial AWD component that tends to fail), thermostat, PCV system, sump off and check oil pressure relief valves etc and keep it or do I just put the new engine in and sell it for say £2500-£3000 and buy something else?

And if I sell what do I buy if my budget is about £3500? I would like a car that can carry 4 adults with ease as I liftshare with passengers contribute for fuel so a family hatchback is out of the question as don't want to be driving on B roads with limited travel on the rear suspension. I would like something that is fun to drive and quick, ideally something that is not expected to be quick and wont spend most of my weekends fixing it. Manual is a must and must not be prone to rust. So far I have come up with the following:

Cars to modify:
2wd volvo 850/v70 T5 or R for up to £1200 (older, more durable 2.3 engine with less electronics and no heavy, complicated and expensive AWD to repair). I would install LSD as its FWD (£700) and start to play with the engine to bring it up to about 320hp reliably.

Nissan Stagea, really ugly estate with Skyline drivetrain and suspension. Would go with the legendary RB25DET engine (only engine that is more tunable on the planet is the RB26DET) with the Skyline AWD system. With a new ebay turbo, exhaust and self tunable Adaptronic ECU this could easily get about 400hp reliably. Only issue is that manual versions seem to very difficult to get within my budget.

Sensible cars:
Subaru Legacy, preferably a GT twin turbo B4 or the slower but newer post 2003 3.0 NA B6. Would keep the 3.0 standard but might be tempted to remap the B4 GT but need to research what the engines are capable off reliably. Comes with a AWD as standard. Only issue is that B6 may be a little slow for my liking.

BMW E39 530d. Would be the most sensible option but I suspect it could be a bit boring and therefore would definitely need a remap but still may lack excitement some of the other cars above may provide.

So what should I do and are there any other cars I should consider?

Sell the Vulva now, as it is, without spending a penny on it.
Tart it up, get shut.

Buy a high miler BMW E39 530d.

Gra.

Volvo is worth about 700 without the engine fitted. Engine cost me 300 and bare minimum of parts to fit it would cost me less than 100, hence I would like to fit the engine before I sell it for over 2500.

Aside from the BMW your choices indicate fuel consumption isn't a major concern. For that money I'd be looking at an Audi S4, S6 or A6 2.7T (you could even stretch to a 4.2 A8). My preference would be for one of the first two. Build quality is excellent and both can easily run well over 300bhp. Both are also very discreet - debadged they look little different to any other lesser variant and you have the benefit of quattro awd.

I'm with Lorin if you'd consider a petrol - Audi Allroad 2.7T. The manual even comes with low range ;) Only thing to check on buying is that the air suspension is working properly.

Or if you want a real wolf in sheep's clothing look at a Passat W8! They weren't very popular, hence prices are very reasonable. It's a 4l pushing out around 280hp and is 4wd/4motion. VW reliability, ample passenger space and a bit of rarity value

Subaru forester turbo -people don't expect them to shift fast!
sub 6sec 0-60, and getting 27-30mpg out of ours

The only reason I put the BMW on the list as it stands a chance of being fun and is really good on fuel so may be worth the compromise. Cant think of another car that will be more fun, meets my requirements and is better on fuel. As I said I have learnt to live with 22mpg out of my Volvo but if I can get something that I like that will use less fuel then the added fuel economy would be a bonus.

I have not considered Audis, just me thinking that that are far too common and people expect them to be fast, the BMW has the same issues too but at least it doesn't use much fuel. Any ideas on how good the tip-tronic box is? The S6 4.2 looks appealing but I can't find a manual even though wikipedia claims there was one.

Passat W8, now that is interesting. They are common but none of them shift like the W8 haven't seen a manual yet though

Model maker man suggested that I should look at a Skoda Octavia VRS and the 2.0T petrol might do it, although it is FWD and for the money that I will be sending on buying it I wont have much left to fit an LSD.

Subaru forester...

I see no one has suggested keeping the Volvo...

I Had a E39 touring last year rob 3L tdi on a 1998.Nice car for the motorway and fuel was ok if you didnt boot it.

Got a audi a6 estate tdi v6 at the min. Really handy and nice to drive car does about 37mpg. I just use it as a bomb about car. Both cars i have mentioned are cheap as chips to buy.

BMW driver = Wanker (most of the time).

I would put another engine in the Volvo and then sell it and get a later model Volvo. Audi would also do the job.

I know what your saying about BMWs Paul, but I will not take that into account when finding a car. As long as I am happy with the car I don't care what type of person other people think I am. All I care about is how fast people think the car is, I do find a sheep in wolfs clothing entertaining.

I don't really like the "phase 2" Volvos, not much space inside and a bit bland. And as the Skoda for the money I will not be able to buy an AWD R, just a FWD T5. The phase 2 2.3 T5s and 2.5 Rs suffer from similar engine issues to mine as well if driven hard. The later 2.4 T5s are fine.

Last time I looked at the E46 330d they were a lot more expensive but looks like they are better value for money than the E39  I am am sure these will be fun to drive as they are a fair bit lighter especially if I remap it.

Just to give you an idea what I am after, something like this 450hp Volvo would be perfect, although would have to spend a ££££ on mods and will cost me a small fortune to run so I will just carry one dreaming:

But if I can find a diesel in my budget that is really fun to drive I willing to compromise on performance.

I get what you're saying about trying to find a balance between economy and pace. BMW 3.0D (whether 3 or 5 series) economy isn't anywhere near as good as the book figures suggest (although that's true of all cars) - especially if you're an enthusiastic driver. Although still much better than a comparable petrol. True to their slogan though I think BMWs driving dynamics are far superior to comparable Audis etc. You could always fit an LSD to a remapped 330d :D That's probably be my choice if it was within budget

I'm not sure I agree that people expect an Audi to be quick. Common yes, but most are the smaller engined variants - I'd say the quicker ones are pretty rare. Therefore a quick one is quite a sleeper. One bit of advice from my experience is don't touch the early 2.5 6 cylinder vw/audi diesels - they are gutless even with a remap (I had an A6 quattro 180bhp with map - put me to sleep!).

I also wouldn't be that inclined to fit an LSD in a front drive car - not unless you're getting into bigger horsepower or like your track days. Just a waste of money IMHO. I run in excess of 200bhp and 300ft/lb through the front wheels of a small car and it doesn't really warrant an LSD on the road or track. Would be nice though  Flatmate's Cupra R is approx 280bhp and that would benefit from one. My brother has a 2012 Skoda VRS with remap and that also wouldn't warrant an LSD. Is a Seat Leon too small? Your budget would get you a well modified Cupra R or possibly a Cupra TDI and both drive well and respond well to mapping if not already done.

Nice 8-) Yep, if I had the money.........

Rob,

I never managed to get the C70 working properly, it's gone now :) I know you are on the Volvo forums but I was amazed at the amount of problems there are with them. The C70 was my second Volvo, both gave problems.

If you are into that sort of thing a Lexus LS400 \ 430 is worth a look. Not manual I know. My 1998 LS400 has done 180k miles now, I've had it for about 6 years. In that time it has been totally reliable. Same can not be said for a 2006 Audi A8, 2002 Volvo or Nickies 2009 Skoda Yeti.

Fast Mercs and Lexuses all seem to be autos. It is amazing how unreliable Volvos can be and people still call them reliable cars. I guess it all depends on what model you go for. I guess I will see how the Volvo drives after I fit the new engine as I can't seem to decide on what car I should get.

I just happen to have a Lexus RX300 sitting in my garage doing nothing, nice comfy car, except it's an auto, but very nippy when you boot it  new O2 sensor fitted, four and four new General Grabber AT's fitted less than two months ago, looking for £2000 but open to offers
PM me if you're interested.

For cheap, spacious and reliable thrills in sheep's clothing, I'd love a Honda Civic Aerodeck VTI. VTec = big grins at stupidly high revs and 7sec 0-60 - with 40mpg+ easily achievable, and only £1200 for a good'un.

My dad used to have a Subaru Legacy GTB, only ever lost the traffic light grand prix once to a tuned M3 coupé. Gripped like shit to a blanket through the bends and got us from Calais to Bordeaux in a little over 5.30hrs ;) t'was a great drive, very entertaining. Sub 6sec 0-60 and 170mph. 27mpg average.

Audi S4 (or RS4 for the looks) Quattro would be my other option
