Can anyone tell me a trade secret or maybe I'm missing a gadget or just being plain doff but how do you keep tubes you put in a gun from going off??

These things

I have tried a nail in the tip of the spout, cling film over the end masking tape but for the life of me can't get them to last.

Cut off a finger of a rubber glove, place over nozzle and squeeze a small amount into finger when it sets nozzle is airtight, throw away when next used, cut off another finger.

A long self-tapping screw, 4/5th of the way in. Squeeze some out so it forms a bubble around the rest of the screw and like Chase said, cover it with a glove finger or cling wrap.

When you want to use it, the screw provides plenty of bite to pull out anything that has dried out in the tip. Works every time :)

I just have loads of spare nozzles, when you go to use the tube again take off the old nozzle and put the new one on and cut the tip to size required. but im lucky(or unlucky) enough to use sealants enough that i always have spare nozzles kicking about.

I keep mine in the fridge. Sometimes the glue in the plastic nozzle goes hard but I unscrew it and pull the hardened bit out. Keeps for at least 1 year. I also keep the silicone sealer in there and the twin pack paint hardener and evostick can. All perfect.
