Marcus Taylor Stuck in a ditch, no trees in front of me, broke winch trying to winch side ways. Can't dig because ground is so full of logs and rubbish. Need someone to give me a pull from the other side of the ditch which is about 100 meters from a road

James Hillerby Use the highlift jack as a winch into the tree to the rear right of the truck? Might pull it sideways and backwards enough. But far from Scotland to help tho!

Marcus Taylor Yeah. I've done that before. I think I'll leave that one as a last resort before I have to sleep out here. Thanks for reminding me though. I had forgotten about that technique in my stress trying to catch the sunset which I came out here for!!!

Dig a whole out front, throw the spare tyre in, attach your winch cable to it , bury the spare and winch of that.

Bugger, at 7:00 pm last night I was half-way home on the road to Bucharest.

I'd have been delighted to go and get some pics, and to pull him out (not so sure about the missus though ).

It would have taken at least a couple of hours to get there, but it would have been fun.

From the photo, some digging behind the rear wheels might have given him more chance to reverse and take a better run at it. I don't know Landys very well, they have no CD and no axle lockers, I presume

There is a you tube video that shows some Arab types stuck on the sand with a Mercedes saloon, no winch, no 4wd, no other vehicles, first they fill a sack with sand, then they bury it in the sand after tying on a long flat ( 2" wide) strop , then the clever bit, they looped the strop onto one of the back wheels then tied it on through the wheel with some small diameter rope, then drove it, the wheel turned and took the strap and the strap gripped the tyre like a winch, after a couple of turns it went tight locking the strap onto the tyre and very neatly winched the Mercedes backwards out of the soft spot of sand. They weren't in a hurry either, but got neatly out of trouble, this might get the grey cells working on other solutions in this type of predicament, you can of course when solo froading think about a rear winch, a tirfor, and maybe a simple ground anchor, although something about closing barn doors springs to mind.
