    what 4x4 for a 21 year old?

Little boxy XJ Cherokee - hopefully on some classic scheme if possible. Missus has one and all seems sound, well put together and proper 4x4. As he get's older plenty of mods/upgrades available. [added advantage is they're getting rare with certain future classic status]

tyre size question [sorry] 285/75 vs 265/70

Well, my deal on 5 BFG A/Ts has fallen through - so back to tyre shopping. As I said earlier I don't like the M/Ts I've got on there at present [especially in the wet - some of which will be coming along soon] My spare is an unused Cooper Discoverer S/T and best value plan seems to be to buy...

    wibbly wobbly 285/75 M/T BFGs

Thanks for the replies, tyre pressure to be checked today. A quick visual of the bushes etc. and all seems well - another thing on the list but as always priorities.............. I'm probably just being paranoid, tbh I don't like the M/Ts and am looking forward to the A/Ts

    wibbly wobbly 285/75 M/T BFGs

I still haven't replaced the MTs - got a set of A/Ts lined up.................. Anyway, been out and about the last two days and the roads are literally melting, weird thing is the 80 is feeling VERY skittish. Surely the M/Ts aren't suffering from the heat? They're used all over the world are...

Ummm, forever Toyota Land Cruiser, I think?

I feel badly now - because I challenged Vinces' post by saying that re-fitting an uncleaned intercooler was a bad plan - that seemed to cause and attract a lot of flack.............................. but also a lot of support. If I've caused trouble I truly...

Forgot to add - dry intercooler BEFORE refitting [the Missus' hairdryer perfect!]

Ummm, forever Toyota Land Cruiser, I think?

No pressure wash, that would be silly, just gentle swish swish swishy with warm water and detergent, repeat, rinse drain and at least you've removed a good amount of the crud - do the same with all connecting hoses etc. Hope this helps - always worked for me, Kind regards.

Ummm, forever Toyota Land Cruiser, I think?

Well.................... apart from his Avatar and obviuos attitude I found Vincents posts rather interesting..................... until I read that he'd refitted an uncleaned intercooler from an engine he knew to be totally knackered to a brand new engine and then was surprised it smoked! Not...

rear spare wheel carrier - I hate it!

Thanks for that, very similar to mine, especially the cable/handle pull arrangement............................ now to see if I can buy one. Tempted though to make my own - am thinking motorbike clutch lever and a good quality cable................................

In the meantime - a bit of string and a cable tie is working better than it ever has!

rear spare wheel carrier - I hate it!

Well, the one in the post seems very similar to mine - a bit of research suggests it's from Direct4x4 [they list them on ebay] so now to find if they sell the cable/handle assembly. Thanks for the heads up.

rear spare wheel carrier - I hate it!

It should be fine, simple................... not rocket science. But the bloody thing is impossible to open because the cable is worse than something you'd find on a cheap chinese kids bike, now rusty, kinked and useless...................... Seems to be a one piece component [handle and cable...

I think that's the same colour as mine - "Moonglow" I believe it's called - sort of almost metallic grey......................... looks brilliant at sunset. Anyway, how much is petrol vs diesel over there?

    Charity with dignity,

Once or twice a year - a proper old school tramp would call, pushing a pram with his wares [rural Norfolk, 1970's] my Mum would give him a cup of tea and examine the lace, ribbons and buttons he was selling, she'd make a big show of how she needed this and that, pay way over the odds and tell...

    80 Headlight Brights slow

Not specific LC experience but I've had similar on other motors - sounds like the switch worn ond or dirty contacts. When you flash it's a far more definate action and good contact, just switching and it's not quite getting there. Strip it down and clean it up - how many miles has it done? Hope...

    up grade

I pretty much agree with all you say - sensible and well considered. Unfortunately governments don't make law based on well considered sense, they respond to the public view/collective hysteria as that's where the votes are. So diesel is the new evil and the majority don't care about a few...

    Not going so good.

Diss and Ipswich and places in between. I'll happily have a look. As has been said, modern auto boxes have a lot of external electrics and controls, all of which need to be checked before you scrap the actual box. Just noticed you're not the OP! Doubt you need me to look at your gearbox!

Thanks to all for the advice, I'm going to pass on the 265/70's so now shopping for 285/ 75's - best price thus far for four BFG A/T's is around £660 from Germany! [free postage] weird! You'd of hoped someone in England could've bettered that price........................... I'm also...
