    Mismatched tyre sizes: any advice?

I've had a couple of flat tyres and I can't find tyres the same size as what I need where I am right now. I have 275/70R16 tyres but the spare alternatives I have are 265/75R16 or 265/70R16. Both are worn, so after doing a bit of maths have decided to put the 265/75 one on (front right). Even...

6000km in 7 weeks in East Africa. What to service and when?

I was very surprised. The Mozambican police were officious but friendly, and we only had to pay a fine of about £25, plus the medical bills. New wing mirror was £50 (cheap Chinese replica, no OE available) and the panel beating will have to wait.

6000km in 7 weeks in East Africa. What to service and when?

Amazingly yes. Fortunately the car was barely moving. There were two blokes on the motorbike and neither was wearing a helmet, which is pretty typical in Mozambique. The driver has several bruises, cuts and bumps but nothing broken or any internal trauma, the passenger only a grazed knee. I'm...

6000km in 7 weeks in East Africa. What to service and when?

Thanks for the discussion everyone. In the end I went for the consensus of the cautious and I changed the oil (new oil is BP Vanellus) and put in a new filter... Fram as it happens. The other choices were GUD and some no-name Chinese things. The air filter I gave a clean (just with air) and...

6000km in 7 weeks in East Africa. What to service and when?

Hi all, I've just driven from northern Tanzania to Pemba in Mozambique the long way round, through Malawi. With detours and side trips, it's been 5,700km since leaving. I've been keeping to speeds under 100kph and I had all the filters and engine oil done before leaving. I put in Donaldson...

    What is this part?

Yes, it is... exactly where you said!

    What is this part?

Is this something that's necessary only in humid climates? The air con works in my 80 but I can't see such a thing anywhere.

Not starting when hot - what are the possible causes?

I just spent 1.8 million Tanzanian shillings (about £530) on bits for the injector pump and new nozzles, which together were causing the black smoke problem. The engine's sound is now quite different, less noisy and generally healthier sounding, and no black smoke at all. I had to buy a new head...

Not starting when hot - what are the possible causes?

Thanks Dave. By "lunging" I meant the normal sound starting the engine produces, but for longer and less convincing sounding. I'm sorry I can't describe this sound any better, but what you say makes sense and is encouraging, so I'll bring it up tomorrow. Thanks again!

Not starting when hot - what are the possible causes?

The engine starts comfortably if I turn the key three times, from cold. If it's twice (waiting each time for the coil to heat up), then it makes the "starting" sound (by that I mean the loud "lunging" sound) two or three times, then starts (takes two or three seconds). If I try to start it after...

Not starting when hot - what are the possible causes?

The engine does not overheat. You're right, when I said "hot", I was referring to its normal operating temperature. There is no water loss from the radiator, whether liquid or as steam, so I'm pretty sure the radiator cap is fine. There is no steam coming from the expansion bottle. The engine...

Not starting when hot - what are the possible causes?

Thank you both so much for your replies. Clive, here are some answers and further questions I hope you'll answer! Here the preferred version is the '95 - '98 VX Limited, which I believe is also the HDJ80, but from Japan. Pretty much every vehicle on the roads here is a Japanese second-hand...

Not starting when hot - what are the possible causes?

Hello, I would really appreciate some expertise on this. My 1996 GX (HZJ80, manual) doesn't start when the engine is hot. My mechanic thought this was a problem with the starter motor, so cleaned the brushes and said that would solve it. It seemed to, but only for a bit (or maybe I didn't even...

Broken spring: new springs throughout or just front ones? And raise?

Thank you both for your very helpful advice. Ideally I'd like to buy all four springs, but I might end up limited by how much I can take on the plane! When you say the standard springs, presumably you mean these? Front: pedders.co.uk/pedders-coil-spring_p4501488.htm Rear...

Broken spring: new springs throughout or just front ones? And raise?

Hi Clive, and thanks for the welcome. Tanzania is indeed a brilliant country in which to own a Land Cruiser! The roads are often abysmal, the mud is like glue and the scenery is spectacular. I should have said that I have no intention of increasing the ride height, I was asking about that in...

Broken spring: new springs throughout or just front ones? And raise?

Hi, This is my '96 HZJ80 which I love but has given me all sorts of problems. In that picture I'd been driving on pretty bad roads around Lake Natron without noticing this had happened: It's one of the front springs. I'd only just replaced all four shocks (Tokico, bought locally). Spares...
