    Many things for sale

Well, since selling my 80-Series I've got a bunch of spare items that I will be putting on eBay in the near future. However, if anyone on here is interested in them I thought I would post here first, if not they'll go on eBay at the weekend! :) - 3x genuine Toyota/Thule gutter mount roofbars...

For Sale: my 80-Series 4.2TD VX manual, lovely car

Thanks guys :) I did like the car, and I don't think there are many vehicles that look (or are) more purposeful on or offroad, but also I never fully gelled with the car and to be honest, never really saw what all the fuss was about! It was a good car for sure, but dare I say no better offroad...

80-Series overland build - "keep it simple"

SOLD! Sad to see the old girl go, but pleased to say the new owners are planning a trip to Mongolia next year, so will still be used as intended :) Also a big "thank you" to everyone on here for their help and advice along the way, it's a great forum with lots of helpful people and I will still...

Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovinia, Croatia, Slovenia by 80-Series!

Thanks Clive! We did Holland/Germany/Austria/Hungary in 2 days, and Serbia in another. Our main focus was Montenegro, and we joined Marcin from 4x4zone.co.uk for an offroad tour around Montenegro for 8/9 days, going up through all the national parks and stuff, which was brilliant. We then spent...

80-Series overland build - "keep it simple"

Thanks for the kind words guys! I've enjoyed the build, although I'll definitely be out of pocket financially, of course! :) I'm not in a mad rush to sell, and living on top of a big hill and with winter on its way I'm not really in a rush to sell, it's always useful to have a 4x4 at that time...

For Sale: my 80-Series 4.2TD VX manual, lovely car

Thanks! :) Yep, I could turn around and do the same trip again in it tomorrow! So, I'm not changing it for another vehicle! It's a third car (and fifth vehicle) in the household, and because our plans for a bigger trip next year have been sidelined, I really don't need it anymore! So rather...

    What sat nav? Thoroughly confused!

Well...I got it to work, but I'm still not keen on the unit, it's not for me! So if anyone wants a virtually new Garmin Montana GPS with car speaker/suction mount, let me know.

80-Series overland build - "keep it simple"

Well, the trip has been and gone, seems a long while ago now! Car performed faultlessly, of course - you can see some pictures of the trip here Sadly our plans for a bigger trip next year have been put on hold, and as I won't really be using the car much in the near future I have reluctantly...

Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovinia, Croatia, Slovenia by 80-Series!

So we completed our 3,500 mile trip (in 2 weeks!) round Europe, taking in: Holland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, back into Austria and Germany, France and home. Car performed faultlessly, was happily cruising at 75mph on the motorway even with the...

    What sat nav? Thoroughly confused!

Aaaah, this sat nav is utterly, utterly useless!! I've now got the maps onto the memory card, but the quality of the maps is hopeless - doesn't even recognise street names for our first stop in Germany, so how it will navigate us anywhere else is beyond belief!! What a piece of shit.

    What sat nav? Thoroughly confused!

OK, thanks guys. Gary has very kindly offered a map which should cover the areas I need, if not I'll have another go with a windows laptop before I go if I get a chance!

80-Series overland build - "keep it simple"

Last major job before our trip, there was an annoying shake coming through the drivetrain at low revs when cold, and also at idle when warm - turns out the rear gearbox mount was shot, so swapped that out for a very expensive OE new one! Old one was pretty knackered, to be fair: Drives much...

Vehicle insurance outside the EU? And breakdown cover?

Right, got insurance sorted through NFU Mutual who have also promised green cards for everything, so that is all sound good. EU breakdown cover is more of an issue though, thanks to the car being over 20 years old. Any recommendations for that?

    What sat nav? Thoroughly confused!

Aaah, that sounds like the problem! I have a GMAPSUPP file, but it's not a .IMG so was struggling a bit! Tsk!
  34. M

    What sat nav? Thoroughly confused!

Thanks Gary. So do I need to use the MapInstall tool, or can I just copy the .IMG file onto the SD card and that will do the same job? Not that I can find a .IMG file in all the stuff I downloaded from that OSM link, of course... I've got the cradle now, so that should do the job. a Bluetooth...

Final checks before a big trip?

That's another good point - my insurer wouldn't offer breakdown cover because the vehicle is over 20 years old! Bit upsetting, that.

    What sat nav? Thoroughly confused!

Well, I have my Garmin Montana 600 and I have to say, I hate it. Wish I had bought a £99 european sat nav to be honest! I'll outline my annoyances below, perhaps someone more knowledgeable can help me out with a couple of the points: - It doesn't have a speaker; I knew this before buying it...

Final checks before a big trip?

Thanks all. Can someone give me some pointers on 'greasing all the drivetrain points' on an 80-series? Not something I've ever done before, but then most of my previous vehicles have been a lot younger/newer!

    Land Cruiser Startup pack

I reckon a decent set of A/T tyres are the only thing you need for starters, BFG A/T's being the most popular. More puncture resistant, fine on tarmac and extremely capable offroad too. Make sure you change the spare too, just in case. After that, upgraded lighting (HID kit?) if you do a lot of...

Nope, was more thinking engine oil, brake fluid, screenwash, etc.... What do you grease on the running gear before a trip?

Final checks before a big trip?

We're heading off on a relatively big (3,000+ mile) trip in a few weeks' time; apart from the obvious fluid levels and lights, what other checks do you do before you head off? The car is a 12 valve 4.2TD 80-Series, if that makes any difference. I'm not talking about big jobs you can do, just...

Vehicle insurance outside the EU? And breakdown cover?

So we're off to several countries that are outside of the EU and my current insurance broker (Adrian Flux) cannot cover with ANY of their insurers, including my current policy! I need to arrange a policy that will cover us in the EU, as well as Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia...

80-Series overland build - "keep it simple"

Thanks for the suggestion Chris! To be honest, the rear handle is only millimetres away from the inside of the tailgate anyway, but from a security perspective I was thinking of adding some kind of locking mechanism to hold both the lid and front door shut when away from the vehicle anyway, so...
