Have you replaced the pick up filter in the tank?

Hi, What year is it and how many miles? Does it start OK? Fuel filters and pick up filter been checked? T in to boost line and check boost pressure. Compensator diaphragm checked? Compression check, if OK injectors out and serviced. It can't be much wrong with it.

Where did you buy the belts? It is normally a very straight forward job, you could try removing the adjuster mount on the alternator for a little more travel. I normally put one belt on at a time and work them over the pulleys.

Try removing the exhaust after the turbo or loosen it at a joint, does it have a cat on it? A little more info on engine type and age would help.

you could disconnect the heater supply and test the alternator charge voltage again.

I’m unsure which make if alternator you have but you can buy a brush box, regulator and diode pack for around £50. They are easy to replace as long as the slip rings are ok.

It sounds like you have an internal fault with the alternator. Sometimes all of the warning lights stay on when the diode pack fails.

Is your red light on above the voltage indicator? Are all of your warning lights on on the dash?

Hi Towpack, I had a manual 80 that the VC failed on. It was like driving with the centre diff lock in all the time. I removed the VC from the transfer case and the vehicle drove fine etc. I think it would be the same as the earlier transfer box with no VC fitted?

If the VC can fail open, just engage the centre diff lock. I removed a VC from the transfer box and the vehicle drove fine. I think the most common VC failure is to lock solid.

I have had a VC fail and it locked up solid, front prop shaft removed and I drove it as a rear wheel drive for a bit. If it’s got reverse the transfer box should be ok. I have had the front axle drive flanges just about making contact and they do drive until some force is applied then they slip...

Hi Frazer, I have used a company called JPAT transmissions before, always found the very helpful and a very good website. They have a full manual with part numbers etc for the A442F. I’m unsure but it looks like a valve for diverting oil controlled by the solenoid valves. Cheers

Another thing it tells you is how good a 30year old vehicle can be when it’s an 80. Not many vehicles would Pass with such little defects.

Just a query, what pressures do you run if using BFG ko2 a/t @ 275/75/16? I have just checked mine and I thought they where ok but on checking were 25psi? I have put 30psi in all of them and it has just done 200miles with the caravan and can hardly notice any difference.

I had a similar thing with mine when a 3” exhaust was fitted, it would knock when switched off, it was just touching around the bell housing area.

I have had this happen to me and it was a faulty lambda sensor.

I think what he means is the idle is too high so that when D or R is selected the vehicle is trying to move and having to be held on the foot brake. It not very nice when you are trying to hold them back.

Make sure the ignition timing has been set properly.

Have you checked the rubber air inlet hose from the air filter for splits?

I would just remove what you have left of the ascd. Adjust your idle if needed. You can purchase or make a blanking plate, just use some shorter M6 bolts for mounting.

Hi , It looks your Ascd has had the speed adjustment arms removed, I think some one has set the idle to allow it to start and run but it’s not correct for when it’s warm? I don’t think you have an air problem as they just don’t start until primed up, it would be hunting etc and maybe cut out.

Hi, I have just had a set of front wings for a bj40 delivered by 4x4 megastore pt and the service was brilliant. Saving up for some other parts now.

I have rebuilt mine using a new brush pack and a new regulator. Parts are only around £50. Very easy to do.

I wonder if it’s down to how hard they are ring pushed by the boss to complete as many MOTs in a day as possible? My MOT station know that it won’t generate any work for them with my vehicle as I do the work myself. Sometimes feel like they need to put something down to justify their job!

Well I have bit the bullet and ordered two new genuine wings, not cheap but if they fit and last another forty years it will be worth it. That’s what I’m telling myself and how I will explain it to the better half!!

Well Toyota no longer stock the 40 series wings, last sold for £166+vat.

Well that’s a surprise, I’m more than happy to pay that for them.

I didn’t think about asking them due to the price they normally want for everything else. I will ask them for a price on Monday. That will be interesting!

Welding that joint in the flat position is ok, just keep the heat or weld pool closer to the rolled edge of the box and allow it to fuse with the cut edge of the other box. You can use the same settings as for the fillet weld but just move a little faster.

I asked the MOT tester what he thought of it while he was under it, his answer “it’s built like a tank” with a small amount of tlc they take some beating. I wouldn’t want anything else!

Hi, the seat fits on the bar fitted to the rear arch, the seat has a small lever which locks the seat to the bar on the rear arch. You place the seat on the bar and locate it by moving the seat forward. Hope this helps.
