    1FZ 80 failed on emissions

Do you have LPG installed? If you do run it on gas during the test.

    1FZ 80 failed on emissions

I’ve had this with a petrol one, check the rubber air intake after the MAF sensor, they split underneath and make them run lean due to unmetered air.

    100 series being a D**khead

Hi, It sounds like you have a positive or negative earth leak, A wire may have rubbed through or something full of water. Try disconnecting one fuse at a time and see if it stops as a way to trace which circuit it's on. Tow socket full of water?

    Overheating 1HDT

Is the vehicle an Auto? Torque converter not locking up would increase the coolant temp. I've had this happen, normally with the gearbox temp light on. Auto box will highlight cooling system weakness on a long incline. System needs to hold pressure first

    Overheating 1HDT

Too much diesel would cause alot of black smoke, when working hard the coolant system needs to hold its pressure to prevent boiling and temperature rise.

Is the pipe from the rad cap to the expansion bottle clear?

    Overheating 1HDT

It would be worth checking the pressure cap is holding its pressure. 0.9 bar. Some coolant pressure testers can test the cap as well.

How to put a fan blade through the radiator

Is your Landcruiser fitted with the pull down radiator cover? I think it's used for cold weather etc but would also help with wading. I'm unsure if all Landcruisers had them fitted but mine do.

    Rav4 engine

I didn't realise the Rav4 had such problems until I bought one. 2AD engine had lots of head gasket problems with Toyota replacing them under warranty. They changed to the BMW engine as they had so many issues with the 2AD.

    Hello from Devon

You have uprated the gearbox cooler but what made you do that? When I first got my 80 the gearbox would overheat, it was due to the torque converter solenoid not working so didn't lock up.

    Hello from Devon

Hi Jez, Why do you find d it hard to tow your caravan? I live in Devon and tow our twin axle van with no problems. You do need to accept its a 30 Yr old vehicle. I find the auto box more the problem than the engine. Is your fuel tank pick up filter clean?

    Can't disengage centre diff ?

I have had one do it before, the CDL would engage and not come out. The wiring into the CDL had a broken wire and would only come out if the loom was wiggled.

    Can't disengage centre diff ?

Do you hear the center diff lock working with the ignition on, engine off?

Have you replaced the pick up filter in the tank?
  20. M

    Poole Diesel?

Hi, What year is it and how many miles? Does it start OK? Fuel filters and pick up filter been checked? T in to boost line and check boost pressure. Compensator diaphragm checked? Compression check, if OK injectors out and serviced. It can't be much wrong with it.

    Changing fan belts 1HDT

Where did you buy the belts? It is normally a very straight forward job, you could try removing the adjuster mount on the alternator for a little more travel. I normally put one belt on at a time and work them over the pulleys.

Suspected head issue - repair in UK?

I have done the head gasket on a 4.5 petrol. It’s ok to do with nothing to worry about. The head is heavy and long so it’s best to lift it off with a controlled method. Mark and remove the distributor at TDC. The last one I did was caused by the lpg being plumbed into the heating control valve...

    Possible Alternator issue? Low voltage

you could disconnect the heater supply and test the alternator charge voltage again.
  28. M

    Possible Alternator issue? Low voltage

I’m unsure which make if alternator you have but you can buy a brush box, regulator and diode pack for around £50. They are easy to replace as long as the slip rings are ok.
  29. M

    Possible Alternator issue? Low voltage

It sounds like you have an internal fault with the alternator. Sometimes all of the warning lights stay on when the diode pack fails.

    80-Series - No forward drive

Hi Towpack, I had a manual 80 that the VC failed on. It was like driving with the centre diff lock in all the time. I removed the VC from the transfer case and the vehicle drove fine etc. I think it would be the same as the earlier transfer box with no VC fitted?
  32. M

    80-Series - No forward drive

If the VC can fail open, just engage the centre diff lock. I removed a VC from the transfer box and the vehicle drove fine. I think the most common VC failure is to lock solid.
  33. M

    80-Series - No forward drive

I have had a VC fail and it locked up solid, front prop shaft removed and I drove it as a rear wheel drive for a bit. If it’s got reverse the transfer box should be ok. I have had the front axle drive flanges just about making contact and they do drive until some force is applied then they slip...

Broken Hydraulic Piston on the Valve Body for A442F Auto Box

Hi Frazer, I have used a company called JPAT transmissions before, always found the very helpful and a very good website. They have a full manual with part numbers etc for the A442F. I’m unsure but it looks like a valve for diverting oil controlled by the solenoid valves. Cheers

    80 series 285/75/16 tyre pressure?

Thank you for your input, I don’t have a RTT or too much weight on board apart from the family. The caravan is a twin axled van and I load the clothes etc over the axles. I will run them at 30 psi and keep an eye on them. I don’t want to ruin them do to running the wrong pressures, my work...

    80 series 285/75/16 tyre pressure?

Just a query, what pressures do you run if using BFG ko2 a/t @ 275/75/16? I have just checked mine and I thought they where ok but on checking were 25psi? I have put 30psi in all of them and it has just done 200miles with the caravan and can hardly notice any difference.

    Idle rpm

I would just remove what you have left of the ascd. Adjust your idle if needed. You can purchase or make a blanking plate, just use some shorter M6 bolts for mounting.

I have attached two pictures, one with ascd fitted and one with the blanking plate.

    Idle rpm

The ascd is a wax stat that advances the diesel pump for cold starts, this slowly retards the timing as the engine temp warms. You just have the threaded spindle showing with no arms or springs on. The ascd can be removed and a blanking plate fitted. I have removed mine for the last couple of...

    Idle rpm

Hi , It looks your Ascd has had the speed adjustment arms removed, I think some one has set the idle to allow it to start and run but it’s not correct for when it’s warm? I don’t think you have an air problem as they just don’t start until primed up, it would be hunting etc and maybe cut out.
