    Proud new owner

I keep seeing people recommend Adrian Flux, but I wouldn't trust them feckers as far as I could throw them. A few years back I was looking for insurance for my self-build camper van. I spoke to Adrian Flux on the phone and got a decent quote, so took out the policy. A few days later, I got a...

Bloody Rain! Will it Ever Stop?

When I bought my Surf, back at the tail end of Feb, with the MOT not due til June, it felt like aeons of time to get loads of jobs done on it. That was pretty much two full months ago and, as I said up top, I've had literally about 4 or 5 days, in that time, where I've actually got to do any...

Bloody Rain! Will it Ever Stop?

This one's for all the other poor suckers like myself who don't have the undreamt of luxury of a garage, much less a workshop to tinker in. I don't know if it's the same all over the country––anecdotally, I've heard similar grumblings from mates the length of the land––but, up here in the grim...

    Eleck-Trickery Question re Immobiliser

OK. This is going to be a bit of a vague "How long is a piece of string"? type question. But here goes: Having endured nothig but rain for about the past fortnight here, I went out to give the engine a turn over today as, the battery was pretty flat last time I started it. Anyway, the...

Help! - Mangled Locking Wheel Nut. Any Tips?

That might be a moot point though [in this case anyway]. As, if the wheel nuts were hardened, I wouldn't have so easily mashed up the head of that one, in the first place. Last night I dug out the test Project Farm did a while back and, as I remembered it, pretty much all the locking wheel nuts...

Help! - Mangled Locking Wheel Nut. Any Tips?

Good point. I'm sure I've seen a scaffold board or two lying about somewhere in the neighbourhood, some months back. They'd probably do the job nicely. If only I could remember where I saw them! Funnily enough, I'd been on the verge of sending the die grinder back. I was a bit disappointed at...

Help! - Mangled Locking Wheel Nut. Any Tips?

VICTORY! I managed to get that twat of a locking wheel nut off today, using a veritable arsenal of tools. But mainly the Irwin knackered bolt extractor kit I pictured earlier in the thread. The 19mm one was just the perfect size to hammer onto the core of the locking nut, after I'd ground off...

Help! - Mangled Locking Wheel Nut. Any Tips?

Yes. I'm going to have to grind the collar off first, so the extractors can sink their teeth into the nut itself. The collar looked like pretty thin metal, so I don't think it'll put up much of a fight. There I go, tempting fate again! EDIT: It actually points that out in the instructions for...

Help! - Mangled Locking Wheel Nut. Any Tips?

It's not only the fact that they're shite. It's the fact that you just know some eejit in Kwik Fit [or similar] will have done them up with a pneumatic driver to about 3 times the recommended torque. It's bad enough trying to wrestle a proper wheel nut off in those circumstances. Never mind one...

Help! - Mangled Locking Wheel Nut. Any Tips?

Ha ha!--I've just been looking at some of those on Amazon. Hopefully the 19mm extractor in my Irwin set will be big enough to fit. Supposedly they're tough enough to be whacked on with a lump hammer until they bite in. If that doesn't work, I'll order a set of those other kind you linked to...

Help! - Mangled Locking Wheel Nut. Any Tips?

That's another option I hadn't considered. Basically just a set of rounded nut/bolt extractors. I've actually got a decent set of Irwin ones already. But i just checked and they only go up to 19mm.... That might be big enough though. The wheel nuts are 21mm but the core of the locking...

Help! - Mangled Locking Wheel Nut. Any Tips?

Things I've thought of so far: 1: weld a nut [or similar] onto the top of it and try turning that out. Dubious this would hold though as it's probably torqued to eleventy-billion Nm 2: flat grind the front face of the locking nut down by a mm or two to get past the mangled part of the holes...

Help! - Mangled Locking Wheel Nut. Any Tips?

I tell you, if I was a racehorse, my nickname would be "Fell at First Fence"! I thought I'd go out this evening and just loosen and re-tighten my wheel nuts. So they wouldn't give me any gyp when [weather permitting] I do the LBJs tomorrow. My heart sank as I saw the crappy poundland locking...

Guess Who's [Almost] Back in Circulation?

Cheers. Apart from the usual niggling worries after buying... What did I miss on inspecting it? Why so many previous owners? How much of this folder of receipts is actually relevant? ...my instinct is that I'm starting from a much better place this time around. The main one being that [so...

Sometimes You've Just Got to Tip Your Hat to Those Boffins Back at the Lab

I've just been having fun snapping various labels in Japanese on my JDM import and dropping them into Yandex Translate's image recognition doobly-wotsit. I really like the way it gives you back the same image, but automagically translated. It's like having Babel Fish glasses. And it has saved...

    What a Dirty Slapper!

It looked good underneath. Far better than my previous Collie. Usual surface rust. But no rot. At least none I could see while crawling round, poking and prodding underneath. It came with a folder of receipts. One showed it had been sold as "Spares or Repairs" in 2021. But, subsequent to that...

    What a Dirty Slapper!

Look. I know that, at nearly 30 years old, she's going to have "been round the block a few times" [pun intended]. But, having just got the V5 through yesterday, I'm shocked... How can I ever take this one home to meet mother? On a more serious note; this has fed nicely into the customary...

Chassis Rust Removal -- Recommended Tools for Awkward Areas?

Well, in the end, I've gone for the cheapo die grinder from the pic in my first post. I suffered Analysis Paralysis for a long while, weighing up that against the cheapo finger sander. Both were similarly priced [around £45]. In the end, I went for the die grinder as I already have a set of 6mm...

Chassis Rust Removal -- Recommended Tools for Awkward Areas?

Thanks. That's useful to know. Another faint possibility I'm considering is one of those Foredom type pendant motors... I actually had one of those about 4 or 5 years ago and ended up selling it again. But, at this distance in time, I can't quite remember why I got rid of it. There are...

Chassis Rust Removal -- Recommended Tools for Awkward Areas?

After spending about an hour scrubbing away at my rear axle with a wire brush yesterday to get rid of surface rust and, while doing so, casting my eye down what seemed like acres more chassis still to do, I'm thinking I'm going to have to break out the power tools to get the job done before the...

Insurance - Add Additional Vehicle vs Take Out New Policy?

That's the good thing about the comparison sites. You can fill all the crap in, get a quote and then go back and change various bits to see if you can get it any lower. But, as you say, it does feel like voodoo most of the time.

Insurance - Add Additional Vehicle vs Take Out New Policy?

I find that's pretty much par for the course these days. Which is why I referred to it as a "No Claims Penalty" in my first post. My insurance renewal quotes go up every year, even though I have accrued an extra year's No Claims in the meantime. Thank god for the meerkat site and confused.com...
