    1990 LJ71 Engine replacement

    LJ78 engine options

Is it manual or auto? My advice is to go for a 1kz with manual pump if it’s auto you will need a standalone ecu (Compushift or Spitronics) or re wire it so you can manually shift which is what I have done. You will need the bell housing and if auto the torque converter to go with the 1kz. And...

Are 71 series KZJ70 Prado's the same Diffs as an 80series?

Hilux will be your best bet, I put hilux hubs on my LJ78 when I converted it to free wheeling hubs. But LJ70 hubs would work. Don’t use surf or other IFS hubs because the disc placing is wrong.

    1990 LJ71 Engine replacement

There is a similar thread not long ago. If I was you I would stay with the 2LT if it’s good, as long as you look after them they are good engines, the one in my LJ78 was a great engine (until my wife drove it ‍♂️) Engine options are going to depend on a lot of factors, for example do you want...

    LJ78 Build Thread

That’s ok, we all have busy lives! It looked like a kzj7 radiator, unfortunately decent aftermarket radiators are hard to come by, most of the one available are the aluminium one and to be honest I’m not a big fan!

    LJ78 Build Thread

A HD rear is definitely on my to do list! Slightly off topic, I have been reading back through your 1kz installs, which radiator did you use in this build? Did you manage to get a KZJ78 one? I noticed the the LJ70 thread you used the 4Runner radiator with some spacers, which I will probably...

    LJ78 repair panels in Europe

Hi, does anyone have a good source for repair panels for an LJ78? Ideally in Europe but as these weren’t sold here I’m finding panels difficult, alternatively KZJ78 or VDJ/GRJ 76 would probably work.

LJ71 engine conversion - Help needed

Hi, there are some differences, the LJ71 will have the same ECU to control the engine and gearbox where as the Surf will have separate ECU’s. There isn’t much info on the internet about 1kz swapping with an Auto. I am just about to do the same with my LJ78 (same as yours but a long wheelbase)

    LJ78 to 1kzte conversion

So last summer my wife was using my LJ78 as a run around while we found her a new car (in the end we stupidly got her a Discovery 4 but that is a whole story on its own!) anyway she was driving and didn’t notice the temperature gauge go through the roof, meaning the 2LT was toast… Why Toyota...

    Replacement door mirrors LJ78

Has any got a good source for replacement door mirrors? My passenger side unit is beyond repair, I tried all the breakers on eBay but no one has one so I bought an after marker manual mirror but the quantity is awful! Happy to go with a set of LJ70 mirrors if I can find a pair at a reasonable...

    Lj78 rear diff

The diffs from a kzj78 would fit, but I don’t think the Kz came with 4.88 ratio. the front diff from an 80 would fit in the front housing of an LJ78 as they are both high pinion 8inch diffs but again, no 4.88 ratio. the rear diff from an 80 or any of the HD 70 series is 9.5 inch so will not...

    Lj78 front upgrade

Not the usual.... has ever done or seen a lj78 with the early LJ70 front end? I’m a fan of the square front end of the HD 70 series but they are difficult to find parts in the UK and are not a straight fit. I also play hard in my LJ78 so Panel replacement is always a consideration. love my...

    Lj78 engine conversion

hi all, thinking of doing an engine conversion in my Lj78 but would like to keep the automatic gearbox. Iv seen loads of 1uz conversions but I want to stay Diesel. My main concern is control of the auto, as it is electronic, is there a stand-alone system that works with the Aisin-Warner...

    Rough Running LJ70

Hi, sounds like you have the same issue I have had with my LJ70 and LJ78 the steel pipes can be corroded at the fuel tank end, and drawing in air. Only way to really know is by dropping the fuel tank down. In the end I made a new fuel tank for the LJ70 and repaired the fuel pickup pipes in the...

https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/elocker-to-air-conversion-thread.708474/page-3 I’m sure I saved a better thread somewhere but can’t find it. All I am planning to do is make a new shaft that the fork attaches to then mount a small spring return air ram so one of the pipes is just a breather...

Hi Ben, Have you thought about converting the locker to air operated? As long as you use a spring return actuator then it will always unlock as soon as you turn it off. I bought a locker off eBay cheap with no actuator, just need a new R+p (it probably would have been cheaper just to buy a...

    Lj78 A343F gearbox

Hi all, does anyone know if Toyota or Aisin made a fully hydraulic version of the A343f gearbox fitted to the LJ78? By fully hydraulic I mean non-electronic. Been thinking about doing an engine swap but not sure how that would work with my gearbox as I would like to keep the automatic. Thanks Ash

    Lj78 auto

Thanks I was going to do an oil change and flush anyway and I might pull the sump off and check the filter. I will take a look at the linkage as I hadn’t thought of that, it does go through a lot of mud and water then get parked up until next time so wouldn’t surprise me if it was seized!

76 - 78 series - where to look to buy for restoration / mod for expedition offroading ?

hi the V8 has been around for a number of years in 70 series but only in RHD so would be available form South Africa or Australia. As already said the V8 only meets euro4 that's why it isn't available in Europe and why the 200 series is no longer available to the UK market. For for a LHD you...

76 - 78 series - where to look to buy for restoration / mod for expedition offroading ?

Up until this year a 70 series LHD was not was not available with a V8 and I believe is only sold in the UAE. 1HZ diesel or 1GR petrols are available LHD but again the UAE would probably be your best bet for left hand drive, i think Canada got them as mining trucks but the would be pretty shot...

Quick LJ78 (UK) info needed (possible purchase)

Are 78s any good?- depends on what you want it for? Tow vehicle or hard core off roader not really. Good all rounder for green laneing definitely. looking forward to this! As said before would it not be easier to fit the 78 body on the 80 chassis? it's something i would like to do as you then essentially get a HD76 but with a coil sprung rear axle. then import some vdj wings bonnet and slam panel :sunglasses:

    engine question

Yes I made a jig and welded the rear half of the Toyota housing to the front half of the daihatsu bell housing. The main reasons were clutch size and starter location.
