Hi there,
Thanks for the welcome. It feels a bit like AA, so here goes, Hi, my name is
Dennis, and I'm a cruisaholic.
Background:
We arrived in London in 1997 from Cape Town, South Africa. In the last 7
years we've been between the 2 countries a few times. Currently we reside in
London, and work for a bank to supply crucial travelling money.
Landcruiser experience:
B-reg 1985 HJ60 was bought in 2000, and we spent 3 months travelling in
Morocco, going as far down south as Guelimine and Sidi Ifni on the coast. We
remained off the beaten track and did some of Chris Scott's (see
<www.sahara-overland.com>) off-road routes. The tyres felt a bit of sand
near Merzouga dunes. 4 guys travelled in 2 x HJ60's and had no mechanical
trouble, apart from a shock absorber, and a few flat tyres. More info of our

Then in 2002 we 2 of us travelled down to Mauritania to try and sell the my
friend's HJ60 in Nkt. We only had 3 weeks to do it, and did some lovely 2
week's worth of sight seeing in Mauritania, especially in the Atar, Choum
and Chinguetti regions. Here the Saharan sand driving got better, and our
experience increased. We managed to sell Bernard's HJ60 and fly out from Nkt
back to Paris. Pics of our trip can be found at

descriptions here! It was a truly remarkable journey.
End 2003 I shipped my HJ60 back to Cape Town from London, so at the moment
it's sleeping on the in-law's farm. We've done a trip around Southern Africa
in the 6 month break to South Africa, where we also got married, so a truly
special time. No pics / further info, but watch this space!
Now:
Hence the reason I've joined the ELCO and 80scool groups - I'm fortunate
enough to have bought a 80 series 1991 1HD-T Landcruiser originally imported
from Japan. I've joined the forum to broaden my knowledge on 80's. At the
moment we're using London winter time to upgrade the cruiser for intended
overland travel - we would like to go back to Maroc and Mori to do more
exploring in the future. Chris Scott's new book has updated overland travel
routes that we're burning to explore. An important future for this type of
travel is a working aircon, so we've go that fixed now!
What we've done to "Knakkie" already:
General maintenance, i.e. replaced, all filters, belts, oil, re-gassed
aircon, new wipers, brake pads
Fixed all oil leaks - cracked hose between sump and turbo unit, loose oil
filter, changed rocker seal cover
Changed radiator - it was leaking and the core was beyond repair
New front hub assembly
New front wheel bearings
16" wheels still have loads of BFG tread, so won't be replaced soon
Next:
50mm OME lift, whoohoo!
170 litre long-ranger tank
Brownchurch Roofrack / Hanniball tent
40 litre Engel fridge - trust me, spent too long travelling with hot stuff
