[ADMIN] ELCO move to Forums???

Forums backed up with an easy 2 use email subscription (4 those that like the email side - so they shouldn't notice much difference)
Also an RSS feed is handy

Great, go with the forums.
I have the mailing list set to digest mode, and it can be very difficult to
follow a thread.
Also the number of people that still reply with HTML e-mails rather than
plain text makes it even harder to read the messages.

Julian.
If you go for vBulletin as the forum software there is an add on available
on vBulletin.org to allow you to run as a forum with mailing list
functionality. People can receive a digest and can reply and the messages
will be posted in the right area against the correct thread. Basically you
get the best of both worlds. Also phpBB has the same sort of capability
using another add on.
Personally I like forums for general use and administration but I also see
the benefits for using a mailing list - especially when replying to messages
on my PDA with a pretty small screen - forums are difficult to read and use.
However the benefits of Forums for growth of information available
especially when integrated into other things like Content Management systems
(like Drupal, Mamba etc) is difficult to argue against.

Subject: [ELCO] [ADMIN] ELCO move to Forums???

Morning Again,
I have been hoping at some point to move this list over to web based
forums that also provide mailing list functionality, however am
struggling to find the time to put into the development of the
software.
I think in order for the group to move forward we do need to move to
Forums - a lot of newcomers to the web over the last few years seem to
struggle with mailing lists.
I know that a lot of 'old timers' on the web prefer mailing lists,
however what would you feel if we went over to forums?
I need to move the site and list in the next few weeks and would be
looking to setup the forums around the same time.
So what are your views?
On the forums front I would be looking to setup sections to cover the
different models as well as specific subject areas like overlanding,
green laning, etc.
All being well I should be able to copy all the old messages from the
list across to the forums to get the ball rolling.

Morning All,
OK, due to the mixed reaction, I'm going to revert back to my original
plan.....
I'll keep the mailing list as is for the time being.
I'm going to tweak up my own forums (or find an alternative) to work
along side the mailing list, so messages posted on the list will appear
on the forums and vice versa.
I'm going to replace the digest mode with a much cleaner version that
you can subscribe to in either HTML or text format, with messages
grouped by subject.
I'll stick to one section/list for the time being, but will create
additional ones on request as time goes on.
It will take a while to make the changes, but will happen this side of
Christmas, I need to do the work for something else, but am juggling
time between the computer and workshop at the moment and the workshop
is winning :)

Julian,
I enjoy the mailing list now that I changed over from digest mode. That
said, I spend much more time at the HUBB and IH8MUD: reason, all the content
is there. I don't have to post to get answers or build my own searchable
archive of threads in outlook or gmail.
Of online communities, I do think a forum interface does a good job of
gluing everything together, but have you considered some of the community
portal type packages that are available? These content management systems
offer many scripts bundled together and allow for member directories, blogs,
polls, surveys, private messaging, image libraries etc etc. Many of these
are open source, continually being developed by the developer community and
are often free of charge.
Normally the hard bit about getting such a site up and running is content
and membership - you already have both.
