Hi,
Just thought I would bring you up to speed on the plans for Salisbury
Plain 2005.
Whilst it is too late to get anything in announcing the day, the
magazines Total Off Road and 4x4 Mag are going to be sending down a
Journalist and photographer each to cover the day for a future issue.
Tim Gibson will be coming down for TOR and Bob Cooke will be coming
from 4x4 Mag.
I had a long chat with the Editor of Total Off Road about the day and
Landcruisers in general and he is keen to feature more in the magazine,
particularly providing more 'readers rides' style features on what
people have done to their vehicles (typically 2-3 pages describing the
vehicle with photos taken at some off road centre).
If you are interested in getting your vehicle covered in the mag, let
me know and I will make introductions on the day. I doubt they will
pay you, but guess it would be a fun experience/day out.
I have also been in touch with one of the guys in Toyota UK's PR
department and they are interested in the day. They have mentioned
helping with publicity, but again time is short. Certainly given more
time (next year!) I think that we can get them to get more involved
I did point out that while most of us are great fans of the marque we
were unlikely to be going rushing out to buy some of the newer models
and also we weren't great fans of the dealer networks due to the
pricing of parts, etc, however this didn't seem to phase him.
He will get back to me early next week with more details of what he can
do for us. I want to try to build on this relationship because we
might be able to get some deals on parts, invites to vehicle launches,
etc for the list members - you never know.
Well that's about it for now.
If you are coming along and haven't already registered, please do so,
the sooner I can guage numbers the better.
Also, if you know anybody not on the list that might be interested in
coming along, please do spread the word.

Hi Jeff,
At the moment I don't really want to get into sponsorship. I am
looking to see what I can get out of Toyota themselves, but that is
all.
If it goes well I would like to think that I can build it more next
year and get more people/organisations involved
Thanks

Julian
I don't mind if they want to fawn, drool and beg to photograph my truck, but
they had better be nice to me whilst offering party favours or a sack of
cash or a free respray.
Just picked up my heater, kindly brought back from Cyprus by my new best
friend. He is an extremely nice chap called Roger Cox, he has a BJ40 in
Cyprus and when we last exchanged he mentioned a scrap yard there and
promised to ask if there was one, which there was. It was nice to chat with
a fellow 40 owner. It's being fitted next week...hurrah.
Out of interest, am I the only one with an FJ40 who is a member of the list
and in the UK?
Lastly, does anyone know a good and reasonably priced body-shop, within
relatively good access of London, my LC now has a reasonable amount of brown
which needs to be cut out re-sprayed and wax oiled?

Julian,
Just to sow a few seeds. If Nov 05 goes well we could consider a pay and
play site next year for a weekend, with camping and a BBQ, (maybe a bit
earlier).
If anyone is ever interested I have a friend that knows lots of lanes in
Wales, I have had some good days out with him and it can be non damaging.
Regards, Clive.

I wouldn't hold my breath about green lanes in Wales.
Once the NERC Bill becomes law then there will be very few lanes left
legally driveable!

Hi Clive,
Ideally I would like to go bigger and better, since there is nothing
catering for TLCs, but wouldn't want to tie it down just to laning and
just to camping - I was toying with something that would run over two
days with people having the option to come for just for one of the days
or both, and also try to offer a bit more than just laning, so possibly
more talks or some sort of workshops.
Something along the lines of a baby Billing for TLC users with more
emphasis on fun.
It is the sort of thing that we could attract sponsors and also get
suppliers like the 4x4 outfitters along, but am personally not a fan of
too many of them ;-) although I do know that Milners do a bit in this
area (I passed them going down one of the highways in France to an
event a couple of years ago).
Having said all that whilst we have had a lot of interest very few
people are registering - so far only 11 cars and 15 people.
Ideally I would like to see 20-30 vehicles along this year - if we can
do that I would be happy to bust a gut to plan something bigger and
better for next year.

Mik,
Great idea and hopefully we will be a bit better organised next year.
Having said that I'm still keen on a cruiser only day/weekend as well.
