Hi Chris,
Sounds a reasonable deal.
80 series were available in diesel form with the 12valve 4.2 upto 1995
then it moved to the 24valve engine which in many respects is better,
however was only available in manual form in Europe so any post 95
models with auto boxes will be Jap imports.
Have you ever had a 4x4 before - if you have most of the standard
things need checking.
Here's a good check list:
http://www.sleeoffroad.com/newbie/newbie100.htm
Having looked at a number of these over the last couple of years the
key things to look for with a car at that mileage are:
Brake Disks - these tend to last around 100k miles so unless replaced
recently will probably need doing soon.
Exhaust leaks - you often get them where the exhaust goes up and over
the rear axle - it doesn't affect the noise levels much so most people
won't notice them until the MOT - 80% of 80s I have viewed have had
holes here.
Check the condition of the steering knuckles (the ball on the end of
the front axle) - if they look dry and rusty, or very oiley the chances
are you will need the knuckes to be stripped down and rebuilt, repacked
with new grease, etc.
Jack up the wheels and hold them at 12 and 6 oclock and try to see if
there is any wobble there - of there is it is most likely down to the
wheel bearings which will ideally need to be stripped down and repacked
although may need replacing.
At the end of the day most of these can be cheaply sorted out using
parts from Milner Off Road (http://www.milneroffroad.com) in about a
day, so nothing too drastic, but something to use as a bargaining chip
to knock a few hundred off.

That sounds like a good price, is it diesel or petrol? It is nearly
the same as mine but I have more miles on. Be serious about it.
Regards, Clive.
