Re the starter:
If you have a diesel with twin batteries and 12v/24v changeover for starting this *can* be a symptom of a duff cell in one battery, rather than a fault with the starter itself.
What happens is that in normal (batteries in parallel, 12v) mode the good battery masks the failure of the bad one, and everything works fine. It's only when you swap to series (24v) mode to start that the duff cell reduces the voltage and current to the starter, resulting in less than 100% engagement and thus getting stuck. There are no other symptoms or warnings to speak of.
Been there, done that, and had the starter rebuilt twice only to find that the problem was the batteries!
To check them you must first isolate them from one another, then test them separately. Well worth doing before taking the starter apart.

Hi Julian
=A0
any luck with the aircon pump?
=A0
Also my starter motor has stuck on a couple of times, has needed an knock to stop it trying to turn over - so presume it is probably on its way out?
